Civil & Ecclesiastical Jurisdiction
Historical Description
HIGH BEECH, 3 miles south-east from Waltham Abbey, is an ecclesiastical parish formed in 1837 from that parish and is on the borders of Epping Forest, 2 miles north from Loughton station on the Great Eastern railway, 3 north from Chingford and about 12 from London, in the Western division of the county, half hundred of Waltham, Edmonton union, Waltham Abbey county court district, and in the Metropolitan police district, and is in the rural deanery of Chigwell, archdeaconry of Essex and diocese of St. Albans. The church of St. Paul, disused for some time, was finally removed and superseded, by an Order in Council, Dec. 2nd, 1884, by the new church of the Holy Innocents, all rights and emoluments attached to the ancient church being transferred to the new. Holy Innocents’ church, picturesquely situated in the forest, and erected at the cost of the late Thomas Charles Baring esq. M.P. who died in 1891, was opened in 1873 and consecrated in 1883: it is a cruciform edifice of stone, in the Gothic style, from designs by the late Sir A.W. Blomfield M.A., A.R.A., F.S.A, architect, of London, and consists of apsidal chancel, nave, transepts, south porch and a north-west tower with octagonal spire containing a clock and 13 bells, played by machinery; the chancel windows, all of which are stained, were the gift of the late T. C. Baring esq.: a memorial window was inserted in 1893 by Mrs. Baring in memory of her husband, T. C. Baring esq. M.P. and there is another to Mrs. Baring and her children; there are 247 sittings: a lych gate was erected in 1898 to the memory of the late Mr. and Mrs. Arrowsmith of this parish. The register of baptisms and marriages dates from the year 1837 and that for burials from 1884. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £213, with residence, in the gift of the Bishop of St. Albans, and held since 1865 by the Rev. Josiah Norton M.A. of St. John’s College, Cambridge. A new vicarage house was built in 1893 at a cost of £1,500. The Wesleyan mission room at Lippitt’s Hill was built in 1876 and will seat 80 persons. There are clothing and coal clubs, the Rev. Josiah Norton M.A. being hon. secretary and treasurer. The three almshouses, founded by George Hall, a native of this place, and Bishop of Chester 1662—8, and the son of Joseph Hall D.D. successively Bishop of Exeter (1627) and Norwich (1641—61) and for some time incumbent of Waltham Abbey, were pulled down in 1890 and the proceeds devoted to the repair of the almshouses in Waltham Abbey: in 1882 four almshouses were erected in Mott street by the late T. C. Baring esq. M.P. for the reception of four necessitous persons of both sexes belonging to this parish. High Beech Hill was visited by H.M. the late Queen Victoria, May 6th, 1882, when Epping Forest was declared to be open to the public for ever, and a tree was planted to commemorate the event. Wallsgrove House, the seat of H. H. J. Baring esq. is pleasantly situated in a park of 20 acres. The area is 1,500 acres, and the population in 1891 was 548.
