Historical Description

LAMBOURNE, mentioned in Domesday, is a parish and village, on the road from London to Chipping Ongar and on the left bank of the river Roding, 3 miles south-east from Theydon Bois station on the Epping and Ongar branch of the Great Eastern railway, 13 ½ from Whitechapel and Shoreditch, 7 north-by-west from Romford, 8 south-west from Ongar, and 5 south from Epping, in the western division of the county, Ongar union, hundred and petty sessional division of Epping, county court district of Romford, rural deanery of Lambourne, archdeaconry of Essex and diocese of St. Albans. The Essex and Herts Water Company’s main has been extended to Abridge in this parish. The church of St. Mary and All Saints is a very ancient building of scone in the Norman style, consisting of chancel and nave and a small western turret containing 3 bells: the north doorway is Norman and the arch is enriched with billet moulding: in the church is a monument to the celebrated Thomas Wynnyffe, Bishop of Lincoln 1642—54, and for some time rector of this church; here also is buried his father, John Wynnyffe, gent, of Sherborne, Dorset, ob. 1630, aged 92: in 1889 the church was reseated, new heating apparatus fixed and a new organ erected, the cost being defrayed by Lieut.-Col. A. R. M. Lockwood M.P.: there are 300 sittings. The register of baptisms dates from 1582; marriages and burials, 1584. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £330, with 34 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of Corpus Christi college, Cambridge, and held since 1893 by the Rev. Charles Alfred Goodhart M.A. and late scholar of that college. Trinity church, at Abridge, a chapel of ease to the parish church, is a plain edifice of brick, consisting of nave only; it was enlarged in 1877, and an organ was erected in 1880. Here also is a Congregational chapel. There are charities amounting to about £30, arising from a house and land, for the poor and for repairing the church. Bishop’s Hall, in this parish, an old house standing in about 90 acres of grounds, now the seat of Lieut.-Col. Amelius Richard Mark Lockwood M.P., J.P. was once the residence of Henry le Despenser, the warlike bishop of Norwich: this prelate, bred to arms in Italy, in the service of the Pope Adrian, also an Englishman, obtained the bishopric of Norwich as a reward for his services and held the see from 1370 to 1408; and in the reign of Richard the Second he suppressed the insurgent rising in the counties of Norfolk, Cambridge and Huntingdon against the capitation tax levied by Parliament: he died in 1409. A new carriage drive to the Hall, with an entrance from the Ongar road, was made in 1900. That portion of the parish called “Lambourne End” contains a part of all that remains of Hainault Forest, a charming woodland of 314 acres awarded as a parish common by the Inclosure Commissioners in 1862. Lieut.-Col. Lockwood M.P. is lord of the manor and principal landowner. The soil is mixed; subsoil, clay. The chief crops are wheat, barley and beans. The area is 2,460 acres of land and 10 of water; rateable value, £4,178; the population in 1901 was 937.

A School Board of 5 members was formed 4 August, 1874, for the united district of Lambourne & Stapleford Abbots; William Smith, Romford, clerk to the board; Henry Aylett, Bower Farm, Stapleford Abbotts, school attendance officer.

Board School (with teacher’s house), built in 1879, for 150 children; average attendance, 60 boys, 67 girls & 38 infants.
