Historical Description

Manningtree, a small and irregularly built town, known at the time of the Doomsday Survey, by the name of Sciddinchou. It stands upon the south bank of the Stour, and though but a chapelry, like Harwich, is nevertheless a market town. Early in the reign of Queen Anne, the Stour was, by an act of parliament, rendered navigable from hence to Sudbury in Suffolk. The inhabitants import principally deals, corn, coals, fish, and iron: it has nothing remarkable to boast of, except the sad decline of its greatness, having been called in the certificate of chantry lands, "a great towne, and also a haven towne, having in yt to the number of 700 houseling people."

Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

MANNINGTREE is a small town and parish, on the southern bank of the navigable river Stour, 59 ½ miles from London, 10 south from Ipswich, 10 ¾ of from Hadleigh, 12 west from Harwich, 8 ¾ north-east from Colchester, 30 ¾ from Chelmsford and 30 ½ from Bury, in the North Eastern division of the county, Tendring hundred, petty sessional division and union, Colchester county court district, rural deanery of Ardleigh, archdeaconry of Colchester and diocese of St. Albans. The Great Eastern railway has stations, each about half-a-mile from the town, at Manningtree (which is in Lawford parish) on the main line and at Mistley, the latter on the Harwich branch. The town includes the parish of Manningtree and parts of the parishes of Mistley and Lawford. (The names of persons residing in such portions of those parishes as form part of the town will be found under Manningtree and the remaining names under their respective parishes.) The town is lighted with gas, and water is supplied from springs rising in the hills a little above the town. In 1890 the Tendring Hundred Water laid down pipes from an artesian well at Mistley, one mile distant. The church or chapel, attributed to St. Michael, and erected in 1616, is an edifice of brick chiefly of late Perpendicular character, consisting of nave and a small wooden bellcot containing one bell: a monument was placed in the chapel by the inhabitants in 1748 in memory of the pious Thomas Osmond, who suffered martyrdom in the town in 1515, and there is also a memorial to Thomas Tusser, 1580: the organ was erected in 1857 and the altar-piece, a large oil painting, representing Our Saviour, was the gift of Edward Daniel Alston esq. in 1823; the communion plate was given in 1633 by William Laud, then Bishop of London and afterwards Archbishop of Canterbury: the church was enlarged in 1839, repaired in 1874, and thoroughly restored in 1901, under the direction of Geoffrey Lucas esq. A.R.I.B.A, of London. The register of burials dates from 1695; baptisms and marriages, 1696. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £170, in the gift of the rector of Mistley, and held since 1899 by the Rev. Edwin Archibald Ley. The vicarage house was restored in 1877 at a cost of £710, and has been further improved and added to at a cost of over £500. There are Congregational and Wesleyan chapels. In the year 1813 the sum of £27 10s. 9d. in the then £4 per Cents, was purchased by subscription among the inhabitants and vested in trustees, the dividends arising from w'hich were to be paid to the clergyman of Manningtree on Easter Monday in every year for a sermon to be by him preached after evening service on the Good Friday preceding the same; this amount now stands in the 2 ¾ per Cents, in the names of four trustees. The Public Hall, a building of stone, built for the purposes of a corn exchange in 1865 at a cost of £1,600, and purchased in 1889 by a private company, is now used for public meetings and entertainments, and will hold 450 persons. The reading room was built in 1849; there is one bank, that of Messrs. Barclay and Co. Lim. in High street. An important trade is carried on in corn, malt and timber, and there are very extensive malting establishments in the town and adjoining parish of Mistley. The Mistley Lodge of Freemasons (No. 2339) holds monthly meetings at the White Hart hotel on the first Thursday nearest full moon; G. T. Taylor, sec. The trustees of the late Thomas Glover Kensit esq. are lords of the manor of Mistley-cum-Manningtree. The area is 22 acres of land, 2 of tidal water and 7 of foreshore; rateable value, £3,139; the population in 1901 was 872.
