Historical Description
RETTENDON, in Domesday “Ratendune,” is a parish and scattered village, a portion of which is on the river Crouch, and known as “Battles Bridge,” is supposed to have been so named from an engagement fought here between Edmund Ironside and Canute the Dane, on St. Luke’s Day, 18th October, 1016. The Crouch, here spanned by an iron bridge on brick piers, erected in 1872—3, is navigable up to this point for barges and small craft, and there are extensive stores and wharves. Rettendon, which belonged in 673 to a nunnery in the Isle of Ely, is on the high road from Chelmsford to Rochford, 9 miles south-east from Chelmsford, 5 north-west from Rayleigh, 32 from London by road and 9 north-west from Rochford, in the Mid division of the county, Chelmsford hundred, petty sessional division, union and county court district, rural deanery of Danbury, archdeaconry of Essex, and diocese of St. Albans. Battles Bridge station on the Maldon and Southminster branch of the Great Eastern railway is about 1 mile south. The church of All Saints is an edifice of rubble in the Perpendicular style, and consists of chancel, nave, north aisle, south porch and an embattled western tower with conical tiled roof and containing 5 bells; the chancel retains a piscina and sedilia, and several of the benches have carved oak finials with badges, including the “Bear and Ragged Stall” and “Eagle and Child”: here also is a sumptuous marble monument to Edmund Humfrey esq. with bis effigy reclining on a slab and the right hand resting on an open book; at the back part of the tomb are two full-length figures on an ample pedestal of white marble; on the right a man in armour and on the left a female: two Corinthian pillars support the canopy, under which are displayed the family arms and military trophies and various ornaments: this Edmund Humfrey died a bachelor, 12 June, 1727, aet. 53, leaving all his estate here to William Fytche esq. of Danbury Place: there are brasses in the floor to Richard Cannon esq. a benefactor to the parish, ob. 20 December, 1605, and to Richard Humfrey, gent, half-brother to Richard Cannon esq. whom the said Richard Cannon made his heir, ob. 21 December, 1607; and to his three sons, Richard. William and Edmund: there is also the brass of a civilian and two wives, c. 1540, with 3 sons and 4 daughters; a 3rd wife, some children and inscription missing: the panels of the pulpit and reading desk and the front of one of the benches are filled with carved oak tracery, probably fragments of the old rood screen: the north aisle has been at some period extended eastward, and has over it a building, probably once occupied by a recluse: the church was completely restored in 1897—8 under the direction of Mr. F. Chancellor, architect, of Chelmsford, and re-opened by the Lord Bishop of St. Albans 17 July, 1898. The register dates from the year 1678. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £470, with 86 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of the Lord Chancellor, and held since 1887 by the Rev. Thomas Calthrop Webster M.A. of Trinity College, Cambridge. There is a church mission room at Rettendon Common, and Congregational chapels at Battles Bridge and Rettendon Common. The charities include £10 from Cannon’s charity, noticed under West Hanningfield; the poor widows of Rettendon have also a yearly rent-charge of 40s. out of Helmon’s farm at West Hanningfield, left by Ann Humfrey; the other portion of the charity consists of 10 acres of land, given by an unknown lady, and is let for £10 yearly. A sum of £20, left by Edmund Humfrey esq. out of Rettendon Place farm, for educational purposes, was allowed to accumulate and a school was built early in 18th cenutry; on the passing of the “Education Act, 1873,” the building was sold and the proceeds invested in Consols; the greater part of the income of the charity is now devoted to the provision of clothing prizes to regular attendants at the Board School: the use of the building, purchased by W. M. Meeson esq. is granted by him to the parish as a reading room. The Revs. Edward and William Bartlett are lords of the manor. The New England Co. the trustees of Madame Villafranca, the Wedd and Forster trustees, Oxford University, the representatives of T. E. Rutledge, Rev. C. P. Brickwell M.A. Christopher W. Parker esq. of Faulkbourn Hall, Egham Charity Board, the trustees of Robert Smyth, the trustees of the late Major Spitty, A. W. Craig esq. and W. M. Meeson esq. are the principal landowners. The soil is heavy; the subsoil, clay; producing excellent crops of wheat and beans. The area is 3.707 acres of land, 6 of water, 20 of tidal water and 24 of foreshore; rateable value, £3,908; the population in 1901 was 692.
A School Board of 5 members was formed 10 May, 1875, William Ward Duffield, 96 High street, Chelmsford, clerk to the board; James Frederick Oddy, attendance officer.
