Historical Description

THUNDERSLEY is a parish, near the high road from Grays to Southend, 1 ½ miles south from Rayleigh station on the Southend branch of the Great Eastern railway and 2 ½ north from South Benfleet station on the Tilbury and Southend railway, 7 west-by-north from Southend and 36 from London, in the South Eastern division of the county, partly in Barstable but chiefly in Rochford hundred, Rochford union and petty sessional division, Southend county court district, in the rural deanery of Rochford, archdeaconry of Essex and diocese of St. Albans, and in the liberty of the duchy of Lancaster. The church of St. Peter, standing on an eminence, is a small but ancient edifice of stone, in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, nave of three bays, aisles, south porch and a western turret of wood with a spire and containing 2 bells: the arcades afford a good example of the period, and the carving of the capitals, no two of which are alike, is especially remarkable: the church was restored and the chancel entirely rebuilt by the rector in 1885, when a stained east window was erected as a memorial to Sir Thomas Noon Talfourd kt. justice of the Common Pleas, who died suddenly at Stafford, 13 Mar. 1854, while in the act of addressing the grand jury: another memorial window was erected in 1890 at a cost of £50 to Major William Wreford: in 1887 the west end of the church was restored and the west window, previously blocked up, was reopened: a new west window was placed in 1901 as a memorial to the Rev. William Wordsworth Talfourd M.A. rector 1881—1901, and there are others to John Ehret Dickinson esq. of Abbotts Hill, Hemel Hempstead, and to Messrs. Frank and Thomas Noon Talfourd: there are 110 sittings. The register dates from the year 1569. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £380, with 40 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of trustees, and held since 1901 by the Rev. Thomas Noon Talfourd Major M.A. of Exeter Collage, Oxford. There is a Baptist chapel here. Charles Bertie Pulleine Bosanquet esq. of Rock Hall, Alnwick, is lord of the manor and R. Narty esq. is the principal landowner. The soil is loam; subsoil, clay. The land is principally pasture and small holdings. The area is 2,544 acres; rateable value, £3,470; the population in 1901 was 809.

National School (mixed), built in 1856, by the late Rev. William Robert Bosanquet M.A. of Bock Hall, Alnwick, on ground given by him, for 101 children; average attendance, 98.
