Historical Description
Tiltey, where stood formerly an abbey of Cistertian monks, beautifully situated in a well wooded vale, through which the river Chelmer winds previous to its visiting Great Dunmow. This abbey was founded in 1193 by Maurice Fitz Geffery, who was also founder of the priory at Bychnacre, in the vicinity of Maldon. By him it was endowed with the whole manor. The only part of the conventual buildings which yet remains is a portion of the cloisters and a small building, employed now as a parish church; this is said by tradition to have been the chapel which stood at the abbey gate, for the use of strangers. At the Suppression the revenues of this abbey amounted, according to Dugdale, to 172l. 2s. 6d. At present the manor belongs to the Maynard family.
TILTY is a parish, 5 miles west from Elsenham station on the main line of the Great Eastern railway, and 4 north-north-west from Dunmow station on the Dunmow and Braintree section of the same line, in the Western division of the county, Dunmow hundred, petty sessional division, union and county court district, rural deanery of Dunmow, archdeaconry of Essex and diocese of St. Albans. The parish church of St. Mary the Virgin is a building of rubble in the Decorated style, consisting of chancel, nave, south porch, and a western tower with cupola containing 1 bell: the tracery of the chancel windows and particularly that of the east window is very fine: in the chancel are brasses in good preservation to Gerard Danet esq. of Bronkynsthorp, Co. Leic. counsellor to King Henry VIII. ob. 1520 and his wife Mary, with 5 sons and 6 daughters; to George Medeley, of Tvltey esq. with his figure in armour, ob. 1562 and his wife Mary, 3 sons and 2 daughters; to Margaret, wife of George Tuke esq. of Layer Marney, ob. 1590, with 3 sons, 3 daughters and 3 infants in swaddling clothes and an inscription to Thomas, of Thakely Abbot, c. 1460, with four Latin verses: there are 180 sittings. The register of baptisms dates from 1725; burials, 1724; marriages, 1727. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £166, with residence, in the gift of the Countess of Warwick, and held since 1900 by the Rev. John Stevenson L.Th. of Durham University. Here was formerly a Cistercian abbey founded A.D. 1153 by Maurice Fitz-Geoffrey, some remains of which are still standing; the revenue at the Dissolution was £177 9s. 4d. The Countess of Warwick, as heiress of the late Viscount Maynard, is lady of the manor and sole landowner. The soil is loamy; subsoil, clay and gravel. The chief crops are wheat, bailey and oats. The area is 1,067 acres; rateable value, £731; the population in 1901 was 83, and including Duton Hill, which is now in this ecclesiastical parish, was 212.
