Historical Description
Wanstead church is remarkable for its neatness and simplicity; the nave and two aisles are separated by elegant Corinthian columns, and the pavement, which is much and deservedly admired, consists of stone, brought from the vicinity of Painswick in Gloucestershire. The chancel is enriched with a magnificent painted window, the work of Eginton of Birmingham; it is a copy of the painting of our Saviour bearing his cross, which is preserved at the College of St. Mary Magdalene at Oxford. The monument in the chancel to the memory of Sir Josiah Child, Bart, naturally attracts attention by its beauty and magnificence. The population of the parish of Wanstead consists, according to the returns under the late act, of 918 persons.
Wanstead House, now, 1823, taking down, was the residence of the Right Hon. W. W. Pole, latterly a large and magnificent edifice, seated in an extensive park, is tastefully laid down.—The grand front measures 260 feet in length, having in its centre the principal entrance, under a noble Corinthian portico of six columns; upon these rests a handsome pediment, the tympanum of which is occupied by the admirably sculptured arms of the Tylney family; the ascent to the portico was by two flights of steps, one at either side. The front which looks into the garden is also furnished with a pediment, the tympanum of which is also enriched with a good bass-relief; the pediment is supported by six three-quarter columns.
The late Earl Tylney died in 1784, when this manor with other large estates came into the possession of his nephew Sir James Tylney Long, Bart, of Draycott in Wiltshire. His only son James succeeded to his title and inheritance; but during his minority, Wanstead House was appropriated as the residence of the Prince of Conde and his suite for some time previous to the happy return of peace in 1814, which restored the king of France with the Princes of the blood to the possession of the throne of their ancestors. Some time after this event, Miss Tylney Long, the heiress of the estate becoming of age, was also the occupant of this august mansion. Alter her unfortunate marriage with Mr. Wellesley Pole, Wanstead House was the residence of that gentleman, an era rather strongly marked by an attempt made by him to shut up the public way through the park; but which was successfully resisted by a trial of its legality at Chelmsford assizes in the year 1813. Owing to the subsequent embarrassments of Mr. Wellesley Tylney Long Pole, this house, once a royal residence, was in the year 1822 stripped of its ornaments, completely dismantled, and now remains a melancholy instance of the mutability of all human grandeur.
The following were the principal pictures at Wanstead House, previously to the marriage of Mr. Wellesley Pole with Miss Tylney Long.
In the Hall were three historical subjects from the stories of Coriolanus, Porsenna, and Pompey, by Casali; and a portrait of Kent the painter and architect. In apartments to the left of the Hall, various Madonnas and family portraits; a St. Frances; Herodias; a ruin; a Madelene, and several landscapes. In those to the right, Lord Chief Justice Glynn and his family; two views of ruins; three flower pieces by Baptista; Apollo and Narcissus; Satyrs; Cupids, and St. John and the infant Jesus.
In the Ball-room was a fine picture of Portia, by Schalkchen. In the chambers of the back front were Venus and Psyche; Diana and Endymion; Venus sleeping; Adonis sleeping; many landscapes and ruins: Pandora by Nollekens, father of the sculptor; and four historical subjects by Casali.
One of the breakfast rooms was ornamented with a Selection of fine prints by the most eminent masters, pasted on a straw-coloured paper, with engraved borders.
In 1735 some workmen, who were employed in digging holes for trees, discovered a tessellated pavement upon the south side of the park. The extent of the pavement was about 20 feet from north to south, and 16 from east to west. Among the remains of this pavement were found a small brass coin of Valens, and a silver coin.
To the right of Wanstead is the elegant seat of Valentines, the residence of C. Welstead, Esq. remarkable for an extraordinary vine, which produces annually from three to four cwt. of grapes. The mausoleum, which was built by Sir Charles Raymond, and which he originally designed for the interment of his family, is a conspicuous object from all the adjoining parts of the country.
WANSTEAD is a parish, a mile and a half north-west from Ilford, with a station called Snaresbrook on the Epping and Ongar branch of the Great Eastern railway and 7 miles from Whitechapel or Shoreditch churches; it is in the North Eastern Metropolitan postal district, within the jurisdiction of the Central criminal court and Metropolitan police, in the Southern division of the county, Becontree hundred. West Ham union, Bow county court district, and in the rural deanery of North Barking, archdeaconry of Essex and diocese of St. Albans. The parish, formerly governed from 1854 by a Local Board, is now, under the “Local Government Act, 1894” (56 and 57 Vict. c. 73) controlled by an Urban District Council. Wanstead appears to have derived its names from the Saxon words “wan” (white) and “stede” (mansion). The church of St. Mary, rebuilt in 1790, at the cost of Sir James Tylney-Long bart. of Draycot, Wilts, is a brick structure, cased with Portland stone, in the Classic style, from designs by Mr. Thomas Hardwick, architect, and consists of chancel, nave and aisles, west porch, supported on pillars of the Corinthian order and a Doric portico, surmounted by a cupola resting on eight Ionic columns and terminating in a small turret, containing a clock and 4 bells: in the chancel is a sumptuous marble monument with effigies to Sir Josiah Child bart. merchant, ob. 22 June, 1699, his wife and his son, Sir Richard Child bart. M.P. for Essex, and subsequently created Viscount Castlemaine and Earl Tylney, d. 1749. The church contains 600 sittings. In the churchyard lies buried John Saltmarsh, of Magdalene College, Cambridge, an Antinomian divine, who died at Ilford in 1647. The register dates from the year 1640. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £750, including 10 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Misses Nutter, and held since 1898 by the Rev. John Scott M.A. of Trinity College, Cambridge, prebendary of York, and surrogate. Christ Church, a chapel of ease to St. Mary’s, and erected and opened in 1861, is a building of stone in the Decorated style, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles, north porch and a western tower, containing a clock and 6 steel bells: it will seat about 700 persons. There are Congregational and Wesleyan chapels, a Free Methodist chapel and a Friends’ Meeting house. Dr. James Pound, naturalist and astronomer, was rector here from 1707 till his death in 1724; and James Bradley D.D. his nephew, also a distinguished astronomer, Savilian professor at Oxford, and the successor of Hailey as astronomer-royal, was for some time curate during the incumbency of his uncle, and d. 13 July, 1762. Admiral Sir William Penn, father of the founder of Pennsylvania, was a resident here and died 16 Sept. 1670. The charities for distribution amount to £61 17s. yearly. At New Wanstead the Weavers’ Company have erected a block of almshouses in lieu of those situated in Potter’s fields and old Street road, London, and founded in 1725; these are for twelve poor freemen and twelve widows. Wanstead Park, now under the control of the Corporation of London, consists of about 184 acres, formerly constituting an outlying portion of the Tylney estate, acquired by the Corporation from Earl Cowley, by an exchange of 50 acres of scattered land and a payment of £8,000, and conveyed to the Epping Forest Committee in trust for the public. The park, opened in August, 1882, has several fine pieces of water and a heronry, and is becoming much frequented. Adjoining are the Wanstead Flats, another open space, levelled and partially planted with trees and shrubs in the spring of 1886; the cost being defrayed from the Mansion House fund raised for the benefit of the unemployed. At Lake House, south-west of the park, Thomas Hood wrote his novel “Tylney Hall”: this house was originally built as a summer-house to the park. This place is mentioned as having been bestowed on the abbey of St. Peter at Westminster, by one Alfric, which grant, it is said, was confirmed by Edward the Confessor: at the Domesday Survey it was held of the Bishop of London by Ralph Fitz Brien, its annual value being 40s.: in the reign of Henry III. it passed by marriage to William de Huntercombe, at which time it was held upon suit and service to the Bishop of London. In the reign of Henry VIII. Giles, son of Sir John Heron, who married the daughter of Sir Thomas More, refusing to acknowledge the supremacy of the King, was attainted, his estates forfeited, and Wanstead; forming part thereof, passed to the Crown. In 1549 Edward VI. granted it to Lord Rich, whose son in 1577 sold it to Robert, Earl of Leicester, from whom it passed to the families of Mildmay, Child, Tylney and descended ultimately to Miss Tylney-Long, who married the Hon. William Pole-Tylney-Long-Wellesley, afterwards Earl of Mornington; it is now the property of Earl Cowley, his cousin. Here stood, in the 18th century, a mansion, built by Sir Richard Child (afterwards created Earl Tylney) in 1715: the Prince de Conde; Louis XVIII. and other members of the exiled Bourbon family resided here during the time of the first Napoleon. Owing to the extravagance of the above named Hon. W. Pole-Tylney-Long-Wellesley, the whole contents of the mansion were disposed of in June, 1822; and the residence was subsequently pulled down and sold in lots. A grotto, built at immense expense by the late Countess of Mornington, was the only monument of this fine estate, and remained until the early part of 1885, when it was unfortunately burned down. A tesselated pavement and other Roman antiquities were found in the park in 1735. Earl Cowley is lord of the manor. The area of the civil parish is 1,914 acres of land and 50 of water; rateable value of Wanstead, £61,960; the population in 1871 was 5,119, and in 1891, 26,282, of which 5,971 are attached to the parish church (including inmates of the Infant Orphan Asylum). The area of the Urban District is 1,766; the population in 1901 was 9,179.
