Historical Description

WEELEY is a village and parish, with a station on the Tendring Hundred branch of the Great Eastern railway, 7 miles west from Walton steamboat pier, 61 from London, 12 south-west from Harwich, and 10 east-south-east from Colchester, in the North Eastern division of the county, Tendring hundred, petty sessional division and union, Colchester county court district, rural deanery of St. Osyth, archdeaconry of Colchester and diocese of St. Albans. The Holland brook runs through the side of the parish. The church of St. Andrew, a mile south-east of the village, was originally an ancient edifice of red brick, but the main portion of the structure was entirely rebuilt by subscription in 1881 in the Perpendicular style at a cost of about £3,000: it now consists of chancel, nave of three bays, north aisle with organ chamber at the east end, north porch, and its original embattled western tower of red brick containing 2 bells: the credence table is formed of an ornamental column found in the south wall of the chancel, forming part of an ancient piscina which had been embedded: the 14th century font was also restored and placed at the west end of the nave: a new organ was added in 1884 by subscription: there are 300 sittings. The register dates from the year 1562. The living is a discharged rectory, net yearly value £311, with residence and 8 acres of glebe, in the gift of Brasenose College, Oxford, and held since 1902 by the Rev. John Todd Atkinson M.A. of that college. Near to the church are the antique wrought iron gates which once formed the entrance to the old hall. The Wesleyan chapel, erected in 1870, has 150 sittings: the Primitive Methodist chapel, on The Heath, built in 1858, will seat 100 persons. Hill Side House, a mansion of red brick, in the Gothic style, standing in well wooded grounds of 4 acres, and The Fields, a modern building, are now (1902) both unoccupied. Weeley Manor House is the residence of John Weeley esq. who is lord of the manor. Durrant Edward Cardinall esq. of 18 Cromwell road, Brighton, and Sir Joshua Thellusson Rowley bart. of Tendring Hall, Suffolk, are the chief landowners. The soil is rich clay and loam and produces good crops of wheat, beans, barley and green crops generally. The area is 1,980 acres; rateable value, £2,662; the population in 1901 was 542.

National School, with an endowment of £9 4s. yearly, arising from the redemption of the land tax upon the rectory which was left in 1823 by Mary Jefferson: the school was erected in 1866, a class room added in 1878 & another in 1895: it will hold 210 children & has an average attendance of 116.
