Historical Description

The manor of Avening, about three miles from Tetbury, was granted by William the Conqueror to the nunnery of Caen in Normandy; upon the suppression of alien priories it was granted to the nuns of Sion in Middlesex, to whom it belonged at the Dissolution. Henry VIII. in the year 1541, granted this lordship, with other estates, to Andrew Lord 'Wyndesor, and in the seventeenth century it became, by purchase, the property of Samuel Shepherd, Esq. in whose family it yet remains.

Gatcomb Park, the seat of D. Ricardo, Esq. is partly in this parish, and partly in that of Minching-Hampton. The house is an elegant modern building.

Avening Church is an ancient, fabric, built in the form of a cross, in the Norman style of architecture; a low tower rises from the intersection.

In a field near Gatcomb Park, is a large oval . tumulus, now planted with firs, which had huge erect stones at each end of it, and arms within it. "On the summit is placed a huge fragment of rock, evidently a sepulchral monument, which has been known for ages by the name of the Tingle Stone. In the common field near it are two large stones set upright in the ground: one has its top broken off, the other is perfect, and stands nearly ten feet above the surface. Tradition assigns one, or both to the memory of Long, a Danish Chieftain, whence the name of Long's Stone or Pillar: near it two ancient rings have been found."

Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

AVENING is a parish and village, situated in a valley, on the high road from Tetbury to Minchinhampton and Stroud, 2 ½ miles east from Nailsworth terminal station on a branch of the Midland railway, 3 ½ north-west from Tetbury terminal station on the branch of the Great Western railway from Kemble junction, 6 ½ south-east-by-south from Stroud, 16 south from Gloucester, 8 east from Dursley, in the Mid division of the county, Longtree hundred, Tetbury union, Stroud county court district, and Nailsworth petty sessional division, rural deanery of Stonehouse, archdeaconry and diocese of Gloucester. Henry Bridges, dated 1615: the traceried east window was restored in 1889, and filled with stained glass, as a memorial to Capt. Playne, 1st Batt. Rifle Brigade, eldest son of the late W. Playne esq. of Avening Court, and father of Mrs. Erskine Pollock: a new organ was provided in 1896: the church was restored in 1887, and affords sittings for 230 persons. The charities, amounting in all to £33 yearly, are for educating and apprenticing poor children and other purposes. Avening Court the seat of R. Erskine Pollock esq. Q.C., J.P. stands at the head of the Avening valley, close to the Aven stream; it is mentioned in Cromwell’s inventory of the manor houses of Sion monastery (1534), and become by the grant of Henry VIII. the property of Sir Andrews Windsor, 1st Baron Windsor K.B.; his descendant sold it to the Sheppard family, from whom it passed, with the manor of Avening, to the Playne family in the last century; Mrs. Erskine Pollock succeeded her grandfather, W. Playne esq. in the lordship of this manor in 1884. Belemnites and other fossils are frequent in the neighbourhood, and remains of a Roman fosse road still exist. There 18 also a tumulus which is marked by an upright stone. Mrs. Erskine Pollock, who is lady of the Manor, George Lowsley-Williams esq. Robert Calcutt esq. Edmund Kimber esq. and A. T. Playne esq. are the principal landowners. The soil is light loam; subsoil, oolite. The chief crops are wheat, barley and oats. The area is 3,600 acres; rateable value, £3,552; the population in 1891 was 984. Avening includes the hamlets of Aston, about 2 miles east— by-north, and Nag’s Head, about 1 mile east.
