Historical Description
BITTON is an extensive parish, in a fertile valley and on the London road, is divided from Somerset on the south by the river Avon, 6 miles east-by-south from Bristol and 6 west from Bath, and 112 from London, with a station on the Bath extension of the Midland railway, in the Southern division of the county, upper division of the hundred of Langley and Swineshead, Keynsham union, petty sessional division of Lawfords Gate, Bristol county court district, rural deanery of Bitton, archdeaconry and diocese of Bristol. The parish contains the following hamlets, Hanham, 2 miles north-west; Old-land Common, 1 ½ north; and Kingswood, 3 north-west. The Boyd brook runs through the village. The church of St. Mary is an ancient building of stone, in the Norman, Early English and later styles, consisting of chancel, nave, north chantry, and a fine embattled western tower, of Perpendicular date, with a stair turret, and pinnacles, and containing 6 bells: the north chantry retains three canopied sedilia and a piscina: most of the windows are stained; there are about 500 sittings. The register dates from the year 1571. The living is a vicarage, gross yearly value £221, including 6 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Bishop of Bristol, and held since 1850 by the Rev. Henry Nicholson Ellacombe MA. of Oriel College, Oxford, hon. canon of Bristol, rural dean of Bitton, and surrogate. Here are Wesleyan, Free Methodist, Primitive Methodist and Congregational chapels. There is a meeting place for Plymouth Brethren at Oldland Common, and a Congregational chapel at Upton Cheyney. At Oldland Common is a large corset factory, owned and worked by Messrs. Chas. Bayer & Co. of Bristol, and employing 250 hands; in the Golden Valley there are the extensive paper mills of Messrs W. & J. Sommerville Limited, employing 200 hands; Mr. John Richard Hawkins has also a brewery here. Bitton Hill is the residence of William Sommerville esq J.P. Bitton Grange, William Sommerville esq. jun. J.P. Beach house is the residence of Mrs. Evans. Upton house is occupied by the Rev. Chas. Joseph Parker MA. honorary canon of Gloucester. The trustees of the late John J. Whittuck esq. and Edward Stafford Howard esq. of Thornbury Castle, are lords of the manor. The principal landowners are J. Whittuck Whittuck esq. the Rev. Canon C. J. Parker MA. of Gloucester; John Bush esq. of Clifton and the vicar. The soil is loamy; subsoil, rock and coal. The chief crops are wheat, barley and oats, and about one-half of the land is in pasture. The area of the entire parish is 7,156 acres; township, 3,355; rateable value of Bitton township £14,909 7s.; the population in 1891 was 3,023.
A School Board of 5 members was formed August 8, 1883; A. Ladd, Kingswood, clerk to the board; Wm. Adams, Oldland Common, attendance officer.

National (mixed), Bitton, built in 1827, for 120 children; average attendance, 31 boys, 30 girls & 42 infants. By deed enrolled in Chancery these premises were conveyed to the vicar & churchwardens of Bitton for ever, by virtue of two Acts passed in the 5th & 8th of Victoria, as a school for poor persons of this parish, and no other purpose; the school is always to be in union with the National Society under the control of the vicar.
Board, Oldland Common (mixed & infants), under Bitton School Board, established in 1844 as a British school for 350 children, in 1895 the school was rebuilt at a cost of £3,000; average attendance, 106 boys, 83 girls & 130 infants.
