Historical Description
DYRHAM, or Dirham, is a village and parish, including the hamlet of Hinton, and is on the Bath and Gloucester road, 5 ½ miles east from Mangotsfield station on the Bristol and Birmingham section of the Midland railway, 3 ½ north-west from Marshfield, 8 north from Bath, 10 east from Bristol, 13 west from Chippenham and 6 south from Chipping Sodbury, in the Southern division of the county, lower division of Grumbalds Ash hundred, Chipping Sodbury union and county court district, Sodbury petty sessional division, rural deanery of Bitton and archdeaconry and diocese of Bristol. The church of St. Peter is an ancient building of stone, in the Decorated and Perpendicular styles, consisting of chancel, nave of two bays, aisles, south porch and an embattled western tower, containing a clock and 6 bells: in the south aisle is a very fine brass with mutilated canopies and six Latin verses, to Sir Morys Russell, ob. 1401, and Isabel, his wife; and a monument of freestone, with a canopy supported by five columns of the Corinthian order, and recumbent effigies representing Sir George Wynter, ob. 1581, and Anna, his wife; there are also figures of eleven children, two inscriptions, and shields of arms: the font is Norman: the church was restored and reseated in 1877 at a cost of £1,500, under the direction of Mr. G. Vialls, architect, of London, when a new organ was erected: there are sittings for 220 persons. The register, including Hinton, dates from the year 1568. The living is a rectory, yearly value £400, including 81 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of G. W. Blathwayt esq. and held since 1875 by the Rev. Wynter Thomas Blathwayt MA. of Trinity College, Cambridge. There is a small Congregational chapel at Hinton. In this parish is an ancient camp. Dyrham Park is the seat of George Wm. Blathwayt esq. D.L., J.P. lord of the manor and chief landowner; the mansion was built from designs by Sir John Vanbrugh; the park extends over an area of 250 acres. The soil is sandy and loamy; subsoil, clay and rock. The chief crops are wheat, beans and barley, but about two-thirds of the land is in pasture. The area is 3,005 acres; rateable value, £3,776; the population in 1891 was 365.
Endowed School (mixed), erected, with teachers’ residence, in 1875, for 80 children; average attendance, 68; the endowment amounts to about £50 yearly &. was left by the Rev. W. Langton in 1668.
