Historical Description

Fairford is a small market-town, situated at the foot of the Cotswold Hills, on a dry gravelly soil, which renders it remarkably healthy. The name of the town is derived from its old ford over the Coin (a little above its influx into the Thames), on which it has now two neat bridges. The parish is ten miles in compass, and distinguished by the Borough East and Mill Town End.

The manor of Fairford was held in the reign of Edward the Confessor, by Bithric, Earl of Gloucester, from whom it was taken by Matilda, the wife of William Duke of Normandy; after her death it reverted to the crown. In 1263, Richard de Clare, Earl of Gloucester and Hereford, obtained this lordship, with the privilege of a market and fairs. It then descended to the Beauchamps, and Nevilles, Earls of Warwick, and was one of the 114 manors which were fraudulently obtained from Anne, Countess of Warwick, by Henry VII. by a deed, dated December 13th, 1483. In 1498 it was again purchased from the crown, and is at present the property of John Raymond Barker, Esq. of Fairford- park.

Fairford derives its chief celebrity from its church, the windows of which contain the finest and largest collection of ancient painted glass in the kingdom. The church is dedicated to the Virgin Mary, and consists of a lofty nave, a chancel, and side aisles, with a tower rising from the centre, upon which a spire was probably intended to have been erected. The architecture of the interior is extremely fine, and richly embellished; elegant fluted pillars divide the aisles from the nave, and a beautiful oak screen surrounds the chancel, ornamented with finely carved tabernacle-work. The pavement is chequered with blue and white stone, and has a remarkably neat appearance. The whole length of the church is 120 feet, its breadth 55.

The history of this elegant building is curious: John Tame, a merchant of a respectable family, settled in London, where several of them had served the office of sheriff, had the good fortune to take a vessel bound for Rome laden with painted glass, which he brought into England. Having determined to erect a building to receive this glass, he made choice of Fairford, where he had resided some time, for the purpose, and having purchased the manor of Henry VII. as above-mentioned, he commenced the present church in 149. '»; but dying soon afterwards, it was completed by his son, Sir Edmund Tame, Knt. The glass was disposed in 28 windows, with four or more compartments in each. The subjects are all from Scripture, representing the principal events related in the Old and New Testament, said, but with no degree of certainty, to have been designed by the famous Albert Durer. They are, however, most beautifully executed; so much so, that it is recorded of Vandyke, who inspected them, that he "often affirmed both to the king (Charles I. ) and others, that many of the figures were so exquisitely well done, that they could not be exceeded by the best pencil. ’’ Mr. Dallaway, in his Anecdotes of the Arts, after objecting to the opinion of their being designed by Albert Durer, observes further, that "neither Luna Van Leyden, nor Golzius, could have been employed, as they both flourished after the church was finished; but for this, the extreme resemblance of the style to the well-known etchings of those masters, wouId induce us to attribute this beautiful work to them. May we be allowed a conjecture, that the designer was Francesco Francia, who was born at Bologna, in 1450, and lived there till 1518, peculiarly eminent in the art of encaustic painting. ’’

In several of the windows the figures are now much mutilated or displaced, which probably was the consequence of their removal during the Civil Wars, in order to preserve them from the undistinguishing fury of the parliamentary fanatics. To screen them from further injury, the Hon. Elizabeth Fermer, a daughter of Lord Leinster, gave 200l. towards placing a wire lattice against each window.

There are several curious monuments and inscriptions in Fairford church The most interesting is that to the memory of John Tame, the beneficent founder of the edifice, and Alicia his wife. It is a table tomb, in the north aisle, composed of Italian marble. Upon the slab, on the top, are inlaid brass, displaying their effigies; beneath is the following legend:

For thus love pray for me,

With a pater noster et an abe.

I may not pray—now pray ye That my payngs relessed may be.

There have been many medals and urns dug Up in Fairford, and in the fields adjoining there are several barrows, supposed to have been raised over some considerable persons, who had been slain here in battle; though it does not appear from history, that any battle was fought in or near this place.

Several charities are still subsisting in this town, for the relief of the poor, and a Free School has been some time established and supported by the produce of money bequeathed by the above-mentioned Hon. Elizabeth Fermer, and Mary Barker, spinster.

The weekly market is on Thursdays; the grant of which was procured by Andrew Barker, Esq. in 1672, as well as of two fairs yearly.

Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

FAIRFORD is a market town, head of a petty sessional division and parish, with a terminal station of a branch of the Great Western railway from Oxford, opened in 1874, 24 miles east-south-east from Gloucester, 27 from Oxford, 11 from Faringdon, 9 east from Cirencester, 14 north from Swindon and 89 from London, and is in the Eastern division of the county, hundred of Brightwells Barrow, union and county court district of Cirencester, rural deanery of Fairford, archdeaconry of Cirencester and diocese of Gloucester; it is 3 miles north from the Grand canal, which unites the Severn with the Thames, and on the eastern bank of the river Coln, over which there are two stone bridges, the western having three and the eastern two arches. The town is lighted with gas by a company, and the supply of water is from private wells. The church of St. Mary is a large and handsome edifice of stone in the Late Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles and a fine central tower with pinnacles, containing a clock and 8 bells: the chancel, aisles and chapels are embattled: the east end of the north aisle anciently formed the Lady chapel, and that of the south aisle the chapel of the Blessed Sacrament; both are inclosed by very fine screens of oak of the same date as the church, which have been restored: the ancient oak choir stalls also remain, and have misereres, carved with quaint devices: the reredos was erected and the chancel re-floored at the cost of the Rev. Francis William, 5th Baron Dynevor, sometime rector here, who died 3 Aug. 1878: the church is chiefly remarkable for its beautiful stained windows, 28 in number, the gift of Sir John Tame, a wealthy woolstapler, who erected the church in 1499; they are said to have been executed from designs by the famous Albert Durer, and represent the leading events in the history of Our Lord: beneath the screen dividing the Lady chapel from the choir, is a tomb of Purbeck marble, with effigies and inscriptions in brass to John Tame esq. ob. 8 May, 1500, and Alice, his wife, ob. 20 Dec. 1471; the male figure is in armour, and at the angles and foot of the tomb are shields of arms of Tame and Twinihow: on the floor in the same chapel is a blue marble slab with effigies and inscription to Sir Edmund Tame kt. ob. 1 Oct. 1534, and Agnes, his first wife, ob. 26 July, 1506; the figures include that of the knight, in armour, his two wives and five children: on the wall near is a brass with kneeling effigies of the same, and another inscription including Elizabeth, his second wife: in this chapel is also an altar tomb with recumbent effigies in freestone, to Roger Lygon and Catherine, his wife, and shields of arms of Lygon impaling Dennys quartering Corbett, Russell and de Georges: in the chancel is a memorial to William Oldisworth, ob. 3 Oct. 1680, and to Mary (Austin), his wife; and also a marble tablet to the Rev. John Keble MA. sometime vicar of Coln St. Aldwyns and of Blewbury, Berks, and father of the author of the “Christian Year,” and to other members of the family: in the church is a lectern with chain and padlock, to which is attached an ancient copy of Calvin’s “Institutes” and “The Whole Duty of Man,” dated 1725: in 1889—91 the church was thoroughly restored and the windows releaded, at a cost of £4,750, defrayed by public subscription, including £25 given by H.M. the Queen: there are sittings for 500 persons. The register dates from 1641. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £200, with 30 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of the Dean and Chapter of Gloucester, and held since 1888 by the Rev. Francis Rohde Carbonell MA. of Merton College, Oxford; attached to the benefice is a lectureship value £40 a year.
