Historical Description

FORTHAMPTON is a parish and village, bounded on the east by the navigable Severn, and on the north, south and west by Worcestershire, 3 miles west from Tewkesbury, in the Northern division of the county, lower division of the hundred of Tewkesbury, union, petty sessional division and county court district of Tewkesbury, rural deanery of Winchcomb, and archdeaconry and diocese of Gloucester. The church of St. Mary is an ancient building of stone, in the Norman and Perpendicular styles, consisting of chancel, nave of five bays, aisles, north porch and a western tower containing 6 bells: a north aisle was built and the church reseated in 1848, and in 1869 an organ chamber and organ were erected and the restoration of the chancel completed: John Wiche or Wakeman, last abbot of Tewkesbury and first Bishop of Gloucester, 1541—50, is buried here: there are 270 sittings. The register dates from the year 1678. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £145, arising from glebe land in other parishes, and 6 acres of glebe in Forthampton, in the gift of J. R. Yorke esq. and held since 1882 by the Rev. Charles Walters BA. of St. Alban Hall, Oxford. A short distance from the river Severn is Forthampton Court, a fine old building, formerly the residence of the Abbots of Tewkesbury, and now the seat of John Reginald Yorke esq. MA., D.L., J.P. the lord of the manor and principal landowner. The soil is marl, clay and sand; subsoil, day and marl. The chief crops are wheat, beans, barley and clover. The area is 2,516 acres; rateable value, £3,065; the population in 1891 was 402.

National School (mixed), built in 1837, for 100 children; average attendance, 56; & chiefly supported by John Reginald Yorke esq.; there is a residence for the master.
