Historical Description

Frowcester, another small village, most agreeably situated at the foot of a high hill, which shelters it from the east winds, and from its summit commands a very extensive prospect.

"On the left is Camley Pike, of a volcanic shape, and the bold projecting head of Stinchcombe; in the foreground, two expanded reaches of the Severn. The intermediate distances between the forest hills, the blue mountains of Malvern, and the turrets of Gloucester, are filled up with cultivated fields, village churches, and buildings of various descriptions, among which the castle and tower of Berkeley, with their lofty battlements, are easily distinguished."

Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

FROCESTER is a small pleasant village and parish with a station on the Bristol and Birmingham section of the Midland railway, 11 miles south from Gloucester, 2 south-west from Stonehouse, 5 west from Stroud and 108 from London, in the Mid division of the county, Whitstone hundred, petty sessional division of Whit-minster, Wheatenhurst union, Dursley county court district, and in the rural deanery of Stonehouse and archdeaconry and diocese of Gloucester. There is a fine view from the top of Frocester hill. The church of St. Peter, situated one mile from the village, is a building of stone in the Gothic style of the 15th century, consisting of chancel, nave of five bays, north aisle, north chapel, south porch and a tower on the north side with spire and containing 6 bells, two of which were re-cast and the peal re-hung in 1892: by the side of the porch lies an ancient stone coffin, the lid of which, inlaid with a cross, is built into the tower at the head of the staircase: the stained east window, erected in 1891, represents the “Crucifixion”: the church was restored between 1849 and 1852, and has 400 sittings. The register of baptisms and marriages dates from the year 1559; burials, 1570; it also contains a record of the visit of Queen Elizabeth in 1574, when she stayed at Frocester Court on her way to Berkeley Castle. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £179, with 5 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of J. G. Henniker esq. and held since 1888 by the Rev. William Symonds MA. of Magdalen College, Oxford. St. Andrew’s chapel of ease, which anciently formed part of the buildings of Frocester Court, was removed to its present site in the 17th century, by gift of the trustees of Sir William Ducie, 1st and only Viscount Downe of that family, who died in 1679. The oak ceiling has the initials “E. W.” on the cornice and the date “1637,” when the chapel was restored by Sir Robert Ducie, Lord Mayor of London; it was partly restored in 1891: the chancel was thoroughly restored in 1896, and the church is now (1897) undergoing further restoration, including the rebuilding of the nave walls: it consists of chancel, nave and a small bell gable over the chancel arch containing one bell, bearing the inscription “Come away, make no delay, 1719”: there are sittings for 126 persons. There are charities of £3 10s. yearly value, derived from land. Frocester Court, built in 1554 by George Huntley esq. contains some old panelling with figures of Philip and Mary; above the porch is the bedroom occupied by Queen Elizabeth on her visit in 1574. The ancient tithe bam, erected by John de Gamage, Abbot of Gloucester, between 1284 and 1306, is the largest existing barn in England, being 70 yards long and still entire. Mrs. Graham-Clarke esq. of the Manor House, who is lady of the manor, William Leigh esq. of Woodchester, Mrs. Thomas Ricketts and James Ricketts esq. are the chief landowners. The soil is principally gravel; subsoil, clay. The chief crops are wheat, oats, barley, beans and pasturage. The area is 1,869 acres; rateable value, £4,681; the population in 1891 was 247.

Parochial School (mixed), built in 1860, for 40 children; average attendance, 39.
