Historical Description
HANHAM is an ecclesiastical parish, formed in 1842 from the parish of Bitton, Gloucestershire; it extends two miles along the north bank of the river Avon and is 2 miles north-west from Bitton station on the Midland railway and 4 south-east from Bristol, in the Southern division of the county, Keynsham union, Lawford’s Gate petty sessional division, Bristol county court district, rural deanery of Bitton and archdeaconry and diocese of Bristol. Hanham Abbots parish church, formerly a chapel of ease to the church of St. Mary at Bitton, stands within the grounds of Hanham Court, and its western end is structurally attached to the mansion: it is a building of stone of the early part of the 13th cent, and consists of chancel, nave of four bays, south aisle, north porch and an embattled western tower, with pinnacles, containing 1 bell, inscribed with the name of St. George, to whom the church was probably dedicated: the font is Norman: there are 150 sittings. The original registers of baptisms and marriages only, and dating from 1586, are in the custody of the vicar of Bitton. The modern register dates from the year 1815. The living is a chapelry, gross yearly value £294, with residence, in the gift of the vicar of Bitton, and held since 1894 by the Rev. Charles William Bate MA. of Hertford College, Oxford. Christ Church, a chapel of ease, is a rectangular building of stone, erected in 1842, and consists of chancel, nave, north and south porches and a western turret containing 2 bells: it was reseated in 1878, at the sole expense of W. H. Atchley esq. and in 1891 was considerably enlarged, at a cost of £1,600, and will now seat 550 persons. The register dates from the year 1842. Here are Baptist, Congregational and United Methodist chapels. There is a Free Methodist chapel at Hanham Green. The charities are of £3 yearly value. Hanham Hall, the seat of Mrs. Burrough, is an ancient building of stone in the Elizabethan style, commanding a fine view of the surrounding country. Hanham Court, the property of Philip William Poole Carlyon-Britton esq. F.S.A, of Bitton House, Enfield, Middlesex, and occupied by R. J. de Carteret esq. is an ancient and picturesque mansion dating in part from an early period. The inhabitants are chiefly employed in the manufacture of boots and shoes. Here is a colliery. Frederick Edward Whittuck esq. of Keynsham, who is lord of the manor, P. W. P. Carlyon-Britton esq. F.S.A, who is lord of the manor of West Hanham, otherwise Hanham Abbots, George Hare Leonard esq. and the trustees of the late Richard Haynes esq. are the principal landowners. The area is-chapelry, 1,212; parish, 1,2471 rateable value of the chapelry, £3,852; the population in 1891 was 1,960 in the former, and 1,925 in the latter.
