Historical Description

SISTON is a parish and village, 1 mile and a half east from Mangotsfield station on the Midland railway, 6 northeast from Bristol, 9 north-west from Bath and 111 from London, in the Southern division of the county, Pucklechurch hundred, petty sessional division of Lawford’s Gate, Keynsham union, Bristol county court district, rural deanery of Bitton and archdeaconry and diocese of Bristol. The church of St. Anne is an ancient building of stone in the Norman style, consisting of chancel, nave, south porch with Norman doorway, and a western tower, with pinnacles, containing 6 bells: there is a leaden font of Norman date: four of the windows are stained: the church was restored in 1887, at a cost of £850, and affords 120 sittings. The register dates from the year 1577. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £190, including 16 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of Major Fiennes B. N. Dickenson, and held since 1878 by the Rev. William Addington Taylor BA. of St. Mary Hall, Oxford. Major Fiennes Boughton Newton Dickenson is lord of the manor and chief landowner, and resides at Siston Court, a fine-stone mansion in the Elizabethan style. The soil is loamy; subsoil, chiefly lias rock and coal. The chief crops are wheat and about one-half pasture. The acreage is 1,827; rateable value, £5,640; the population in 1891 was 1,200, but excluding that part of the parish in the ecclesiastical parish of Warmley, is 375.

OVERS was a Roman settlement.
