Historical Description

Wickwar, a small market town and very ancient corporation, being governed by a mayor and alderman. The market day is on Monday. The town is well watered by two brooks, over one of which is a handsome stone bridge. There is a Free-school belonging to the town, and the neighbouring wastes afford plenty of coal.

In the garden of the manor-house there was many years since a chesnut-tree, which measured 19 yards, or 57 feet in circumference, at the height of six feet above the ground, and supposed to have been planted in the reign of King John, about the year 1216.

Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

WICKWAR is a parish, and formerly a borough by prescription; it has a station on the Bristol and Birmingham section of the Midland railway, and is 4 miles north from Chipping Sodbury, 4 south-west from Wotton, 18 north-west from Bath, 15 north-north-east from Bristol, 24 south-by-west from Gloucester, and 120 from London, in the Southern division of the county, upper division of Grumbalds Ash hundred, Chipping Sodbury union and county court district, petty sessional division of Sodbury, rural deanery of Hawkesbury, archdeaconry of Bristol and diocese of Gloucester. The corporation, constituted under a charter of Charles II. consisted of a mayor and twelve aldermen, but was abolished under the “Municipal Corporations Act,” 46 and 47 Vict. cap. 18, 1883. Holy Trinity church is an ancient building of stone, principally in the Perpendicular style with some remains of an earlier date, and consists of chancel, nave of four bays, north aisle, south porch and a lofty embattled western tower containing 6 bells, recast in 1693: a new organ was erected in 1889 by public subscription at a cost of £380: the communion plate dates from 1730: the church was renovated and refitted in 1829, at a cost of about £700, and thoroughly restored in 1881, at a cost of £2,228, under the superintendence of Mr. W. L. Bernard, architect, of Bristol, and now affords 400 sittings. The register dates from the year 1689. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £384, including 76 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Earl of Ducie, and held since 1864 by the Rev. Ralph John Lyon MA. of Trinity College, Cambridge. There are Congregational and Baptist chapels. The Literary Institute, established in the year 1840, has a library of 50 volumes, and a reading-room. There is a county police station with two constables. In the parish are four malt houses and one extensive brewery and also another. The local charities amount to about £1,300, producing about £60 yearly, derived from lands and bequests left by various benefactors since the year 1620, and also one held jointly with the parish of Yate, yearly value now about £6, arising from funds left in 1722 by Colonel Yate, and distributed principally in bread and clothing by the rector and two churchwardens. Fifty acres of land are allotted by the Earl of Ducie, in half acres, for the use of such parishioners as he may choose. The market day is Monday. Fairs were once held on April 6, for cattle, pigs and sheep, and on the first Monday in November, but these, as well as the weekly markets, granted with the April fair, in the reign of Edward I. have now fallen into disuse. The Earl of Ducie P.C., F.R.S, is lord of the manor and principal landowner. The soil is clayey; subsoil, marl, clay and limestone rock. The chief crops are wheat, barley and roots. The area is 2,307 acres; rateable value, £6,309; the population in 1891 was 933.

Grammar, founded in 1684, & endowed by Alexander Hosea, who left houses in Holborn, London, for that purpose: in pursuance of a new scheme, framed in 1869 by the Endowed Schools Commissioners, the school was conducted until 1882 as a secondary school, 25 boys being educated on the Foundation as free boys; in 1884 the school was reorganised as an elementary school by the Charity Commissioners, & the governing body now consists of the lord of the manor of Wickwar, ex-officio, 3 co-optative, & 5 representative governors; the latter being appointed by the Wickwar vestry, the Wickwar School Board & the County Council; scholars are taught free, & the average attendance is 70.

A School Board of 5 members was formed Aug. 22, 1892; Frederic W. Fry, Wotton-under-Edge, clerk to the board.
