Historical Description

AMPORT (or Amport St. Mary) is a village and parish on the River Anna, 2 miles south from Weyhill station on the Andover and Cheltenham branch, 2 ¾ north-east from Grateley station, on the Andover and Salisbury section of the London and South Western railway, and 4 ½ west-by-south from Andover, in the Western division of the County, Andover hundred, petty sessional division, union and county court district, rural deanery of Andover, and archdeaconry and diocese of Winchester. The parish extends 5 miles to West Cholderton. The church of St. Mary is an ancient cruciform edifice of flint, principally in the Decorated style, and consists of chancel, nave and transepts, with central square tower containing 6 bells; the whole of the windows are stained: in the chancel are sedilia and a piscina of the Decorated period: the font was a gift in 1865 from the Earl of Dudley: the church has been restored and affords 220 sittings.

The register dates from the year 1660. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £528, with 69 acres of glebe, and residence, in the gift of the Dean and Chapter of Chichester, and held since 1896 by the Rev. George Septimus Gruggen M.A. of St. John’s College, Cambridge. Here is a Primitive Methodist chapel built in 1846. Pursuant to the will of the Rev. Thomas Sheppard D.D. dated 1815, £10,208 6s. 8d. was invested in £2 ¾ per cent, stock in the names of the master and fellows of Magdalen College, Oxford and the interest applied to the maintenance of a school and an almshouse for 6 widows of upwards of 50 years of age, each inmate having two rooms and receiving weekly ten shillings and clothes and medical attendance; the trustees are the vicar of Amport and the rectors of Quarley and Thruxton. Amport House, the seat of the Marquesis of Winchester, is a mansion of white brick in the Elizabethan style, built in 1857, and standing in a well-wooded park of 200 acres. Cholderton Lodge, 4 miles west of the village, the residence of Henry Charles Stephens esq. M.P., F.G.S., J.P. is a building of red brick and flint, standing in wooded grounds of 60 acres. The Marquess of Winchester, who is lord of the manor, R. A. Routh esq. and H. C. Stephens esq. M.P. are the principal landowners. The soil is very light; subsoil, chalk. The chief crops are wheat, barley, oats, saintfoin and turnips. The area is 3,959 acres; rateable value, £4,301; the population in 1891 was 603, including the-tithings of East Cholderton and Sarson.

School, with residence, erected in 1815, & endowed with £40 a year from the before mentioned Sheppard charity: in 1892 it was enlarged, & again enlarged in 1898, will now hold 190 children; average attendance, 129.
