Historical Description

Basing or Old Basing is where a bloody battle was fought between the Saxons and the Danes, in 871, when the Saxons, commanded by King Ethelred and his brother Alfred, were defeated. This place was rendered still more remarkable by the gallant defence of Basing House against the forces of the Parliament, during the Civil Wars in the reign of Charles I. by John Paulet, Marquis of Winchester, ancestor of the Duke of Bolton, and lineal descendant from Hugh de Port, who, according to the Doomsday survey, held fifty-five lordships in this county.

The marquis garrisoned his house with a resolute band of old soldiers, and held it nearly two years against the Parliament, very much to the prejudice of their military operations in this quarter throughout the war, by interrupting every thing that passed on the great western road, to the great annoyance and injury of the trade of the metropolis; at length, after a vigorous defence, it was taken by storm, with the brave marquis in it, by Oliver Cromwell, who, in revenge for the obstinate resistance it made, put almost all the garrison to the sword, and burnt down the noble fabric to the ground, which, he said, was fitter for the residence of an emperor than a subject. The strength of the building was such as to resist the battery of cannon in several attacks. The plunder obtained on this occasion amounted to 200,000l. in cash, jewels, and rich furniture. Among the latter was a bed, which it is said was valued at 1400l. so that the share of every private soldier was nearly 300l. in money. The marquis, in honour of the principles that actuated him, called this house Aimez Loyaulte, (Love Loyalty,) which he caused to be written with a diamond upon every glass window, as if he would have it a perpetual monument of loyalty to his prince, but this served only to provoke the republicans the more. Aimez Loyaulie has ever since been the motto of the family arms.

Basing House appears to have been originally built on the site of the old castle of Basing, in a most magnificent style, by Sir William Paulet, Knt. who was created Baron St. John of Basing, by Henry the Eighth, and Earl of Wiltshire and Marquis of Winchester, by Edward the Sixth. In the year 1560, Queen Elizabeth was entertained at this place with great splendour, and much to her satisfaction. The area of the works, including the garden and entrenchments, occupied about fourteen acres and a half.

The marquis lived until the Restoration, but received no recompence for the losses he had sustained through his attachment to his king. He died in 1674, at Englefield in Berkshire, where his family had another magnificent house, and lies buried in the parish church there. He was succeeded in his titles and estates by his eldest son Charles, of whom Granger, in his Biographical Dictionary, gives the following character :—" This nobleman, when he saw that men of sense were at their wits' end in the arbitrary and tyrannical reign of James the Second, thought it prudent to assume the character of a madman, as the first Brutus did in the reign of Tarquin : he danced, hunted, or hawked a good part of the day, went to bed before noon, and constantly sat at table all night. He went to dinner at six or seven in the evening, and his meal lasted till six or seven next morning; during which he eat, drank, smoked, talked, or listened to music. The company that dined with him were at liberty to rise and amuse themselves, or take a nap whenever they were so disposed, but the dishes and bottles were all the while standing upon the table. Such a man as this was thought a very unlikely person to concern himself with politics or with religion. By this conduct he was neither embroiled in public affairs, nor gave the least umbrage to the court; but he exerted himself so much at the Revolution, that he was, for his eminent services, created Duke of Bolton : he afterwards raised a regiment of foot, for the reduction of Ireland." He died in 1698, aged 59.

The sixth and last Duke of Bolton died at the age of 74, in the year 1794, and the Basing and Hackwood estates descended to the present Lord Bolton.

Basing Church is a large ancient structure, deserving the notice of the traveller. It appears, from an inscription in the north aisle, to have been repaired in 1519, by Sir John Pawlet, Knt. who, with others of the family, lie buried beneath two open-arched tombs, one on each side of the chancel. All the dukes of Bolton are also buried in this church, in the family vault of the Paulets, in the south aisle. There are several banners, upon which are emblazoned the arms of the Paulet family, and their alliances, hanging in the aisle, with the fragments of others, decayed through age.

Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

BASING (or Old Basing) is a parish and considerable village on the river Loddon, 2 miles north-east from Basingstoke, in the Northern division of the county, Basingstoke hundred, petty sessional division, union and county court district, and rural deanery of Basingstoke and archdeaconry and diocese of Winchester. The South Western and the Basingstoke branch of the Great Western railways, and Basingstoke canal pass through the parish; a high embankment of the South Western is near the church. The church of St. Mary, originally Norman, is an ancient structure of flint and stone in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles extending to the whole length of the nave and chancel, and an eastern embattled tower with pinnacles, containing a clock and 2 bells; there is a font of the 15th century, tombs of the Paulet family, and among the monuments is one by Flaxman, to Henry, sixth Duke of Bolton, Admiral of the White, who died 24th December, 1794. The church was restored in 1874, under the direction of T. H. Wyatt esq. architect, at a cost of £2,800; some tiles of the 13th or 14th centuries were found during the progress of the work in the flooring of the church, as well as fragments of Norman carving: the organ was provided in 1878, at a cost of £414: there are sittings for 600 persons. The register dates from the year 1655. The living is a vicarage, with that of Up-Nately annexed: net in come £312, with 19 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of the President and Fellows of Magdalen College, Oxford, and held since 1864 by the Rev. Robert Falkner Hessey M.A. formerly Fellow and Tutor of that college and rural dean. The vicarage house was erected in 1866, by the patrons and the vicar, at a cost of between £2,000 and £3,000. Here is a Primitive Methodist chapel, built in 1867, and a Congregational chapel, built in 1868. Besides the Duke of Bolton’s charity of £24 yearly, left in 1694, there are smaller charities left by Henry Lamport, of this parish, the Upton family and William Barber, of this parish, and by Mr. Charles Webb of Basingstoke. The Union workhouse for Basingstoke district, erected in 1836, stands in this parish; it is capable of containing 426 inmates, but at present (1898) there are not more than 170. Basing has been distinguished as the scene of a severe battle, fought in 871, between the Danes and the English, when the latter, under the command of Alfred and his brother, King Etheldred, were defeated. There appears to have been a castle here at some remote period, for in a grant made to the priory of Monks Sherborne, in the reign of Henry II. mention is made of the Old Castle of Basing: this appears to have been rebuilt in a magnificent style by Sir William Paulet K.G. first Marquess of Winchester: on the breaking out of the civil war Basing House was put into a state of defence, and garrisoned and held for four years, by John, the fifth Marquess of Winchester, for King Charles I. (of whom there is a full length portrait in the house at Hackwood), but was carried by storm by Oliver Cromwell, who destroyed the place; the area of the works occupied 14 ½ acres; the form was irregular, ditches very deep, the ramparts high and strong, as is evinced by the remains: the north gate way and a portion of the outer wall are still standing. Some interesting excavations have been made in the ruins by order of Lord Bolton. About a mile and a half south of the village, and situated partly within the parish, is the park and stately mansion of Hackwood, the property of Lord Bolton, and described under Basingstoke. Lord Bolton is lord of Basing manor, Lord Basing, of Hoddington House, Odiham, lord of Byfleet manor, and Charles Lennard Chute, of the Vine, near Basingstoke, of Cufauds manor. The chief landowners are Lord Bolton J.P. the trustees of the late Chaloner W. Chute, Lord Basing, the trustees of the late G. Lamb esq. and Clavell Salter esq. The soil is London and plastic clay and chalk; subsoil, clay and chalk. The chief crops are wheat, barley and roots. The area is 5,585 acres of land and 50 of water; rateable value, £15,342; the population in 1891 was 1,352, including 9 officers and 182 inmates of the Basingstoke union house.

By Local Government Board Order, 8 Dec. 1879, detached parts of Eastrop and Nately Scures were transferred to this parish, and the rural portion of Eastrop annexed to this parish in 1894.

National School (mixed), erected by subscription in 1866, with class room, at a cost of £640; an infant school was added in 1885, at a cost of about £200; average attendance, 165; an endowment of £20 a year was left in the year 1863 by Mrs. Sophia Sheppard, widow of a former vicar, Dr. Sheppard; & a master’s house was erected in 1871, at a cost of £220.
