Historical Description
BEMBRIDGE is a village and ecclesiastical parish, formed in 1827, and civil parish in 1894, out of Brading, situated at the mouth of Brading Harbour, opposite St. Helen's, at the extremity of a peninsula of about 3 miles in length, being the most eastern part of the island, rural deanery of East Wight, archdeaconry of the Isle of Wight, and diocese of Winchester. The Bembridge and Brading railway has a station here. The Brading Harbour Company have carried out extensive alterations; erected (1882) the Royal Spithead hotel, the head quarters of the Isle of Wight Golf club; and established extensive oyster breeding beds, and placed about 800 acres of reclaimed land under cultivation. The Isle of Wight Transit Co. have a station here for the conveyance of passengers and goods to Langstone Harbour. There is frequent communication with St. Helen’s by ferry boats. There is a system of public drainage, and gas and water companies; the gas works are in St. Helen’s parish. The church of the Holy Trinity is a stone building in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, nave of 5 bays, south aisle, and north and south porches, and has a western lower surmounted by a spire, containing clock and 3 bells: there are several stained windows, one at the west end of the nave to the memory of the Rev. Sir Henry Thompson bart., first incumbent of Bembridge from 1827 to 1835: the east window was erected by the parishioners to Miss Elizabeth Cope, who died in 1863: on the north side of the nave is a stained window effected by the Rev. James Nelson Palmer M.A. in memory of his wife, Sarah Palmer, who died in 1886: at the west end of the aisle is a memorial window to Emily Isabella Stokes, erected by her husband the Rev. Huddleston Stokes M.A. late curate of Bembridge; and two others in the aisle, one to Jeremiah Dennett, erected in 1886 by his daughter Louisa, and another to John William Dennett, erected at the same time by his sister Louisa: new brass altar rails were presented in 1893 by the Rev. John Le Mesurier M.A. hon. canon of Winchester, vicar 1851—91: in 1896 an organ chamber was built at a cost of £300, and in 1897 a new choir vestry was erected and the chancel fitted with fine oak stalls: there are 430 sittings. The register dates from the year 1827. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £95, with 1 acre of glebe, in the gift of the vicar of Brading, and held since 1891 by the Rev. Edward Howard Francis M.A. of Jesus College, Cambridge. Charities amounting to about £25 are expended annually in relieving the poor and supporting the schools. The Wesleyan chapel here was built in 1844, and at Hillway there is a small mission hall. The Working Men’s Club and Reading Room, opened in Nov. 1897, is carried on under the patronage of Mrs. F, R. Thomas, who gave nearly the whole of the furniture and fittings. A granite obelisk, in memory of the second Earl of Yarborough, was erected by subscription in 1849, on the summit of Whitecliff Down, and is a conspicuous object from most parts of the island and from the sea. Bembridge Fort is on Bembridge Down; there is also a masked battery at Steyne, Sir Graham E. W. Graeme Hamond-Graeme bart. of Yarmouth, Isle of Wight, who is lord of the manor, and Lieut.-Col. Augustus Henry Macdonald Moreton are the chief landowners. The soil is loamy; subsoil, gravelly. The chief crops are wheat, barley and oats.
