Historical Description
BINSTEAD is a parish on the coast 1 mile west from Ryde and about 6 miles east-north-east from Newport, in the rural deanery of East Wight, archdeaconry of the Isle of Wight and diocese of Winchester. The church of the Holy Cross, rebuilt in 1844, is an edifice of stone in the Early Decorated style, consisting of chancel, nave of five bays, and a north aisle, added in, 1876, with vestry, south porch and an open western turret containing 1 bell: the chancel is now the only remaining portion of the ancient fabric, and the east wall retains several portions of herring-bone work; on the south side, under a depressed arch, is a low side window, square-headed, opened in 1884, and the east and west lancet windows and four others are stained, all being memorials: in the north aisle is a mural brass to Alleyne Cox Yard, who died in Beluchistan, 22 July, 1886; and by the chancel arch is a monument to the Rev. Philip Hewett M.A. 46 years vicar here: there are 240 sittings. In the churchyard is a tombstone carved with the representation of a boat in chase of a sloop, and an inscription to Thomas Sivell, a smuggler, who was cruelly shot on board his sloop by the Custom’s officers of Portsmouth, 15 June, 1785; there is also an altar tomb to James Goodlad, parson, and Sarah his wife, 1620 (?); the south-east entrance to the churchyard, next the lane from Ryde, consists of a Norman doorway, formerly the north entrance to the church; above which is a grotesque squatting figure. The register dates from the year 1710. The living is a rectory, net yearly income £90, with 5 acres of glebe, and residence, in the gift of the Bishop of Winchester, and held since 1897 by the Rev. Silvanus Key Barton M.A. of Kings College, Cambridge. There is a Wesleyan chapel here. A cemetery containing about an acre, with mortuary chapel, was formed in 1856; the land was presented by the late John B. Willis-Fleming esq. (d. 1872); it is under the control of the Parish Council. A reading room was erected in 1893 by Lieut. H. Cartside Tippinge, in memory of his late uncle. Quarr Abbey, the scanty ruins of which stand in this parish, was founded by Baldwin de Redvers in 1131 (32 Hen. I.) for monks of the Cistercian order, and dedicated to St. Mary the Virgin. In 1340, according to Worsley, the abbot obtained license from Edw. III. to fortify the abbey with walls and towers; the walls surrounding the precincts still remain, and the foundations of a detached building, about 78 by 36 feet have been met with some distance north of the precinct, and near the coast; the most considerable portion of the abbey now standing consists of the south part of a range of buildings which formed the western side of the cloisters, and comprised an undercroft or cellarage; and over this a dorter (dormitory) assigned to the lay brothers; projecting from this, eastward, is a kind of transept, with angle buttresses, added in the 16th or 17th century and extending across what was the west alley of the cloisters; two doorways and some windows in this structure appear to be original: to the north-east and forming part of the north side of the cloister, are remains of the kitchen, with two lockers and the serving-hatch; adjoining the kitchen on the east was the frater (refectory), 90 by about 30 feet, and standing north and south; part of the south and west walls are left and include on the south one side of the entrance from the cloister, with one Early English shaft and cap yet remaining; there are also two recesses or lockers, and the hatch to the kitchen, already mentioned, which on this side has dwarf shafts, supporting a moulded segmental arch. At the north-east angle of the frater is another building supposed to have been a wood house, and still used for that purpose, and its south wall also belonged to an adjoining chamber, and contains the lower part of a semicircular recess. The only other portion of the building now standing is on the eastern extremity of the site, and consists of portions of the walls of the infirmary chapel, extending over the stream, with remains of an elegant screen of three arches and a fireplace of Perpendicular date. The whole site was almost completely excavated in 1891 by Mr. Percy Goddard Stone F.R.I.B.A.; and the foundations of the buildings on the east and south sides of the cloisters were readily made out, some part of their fabric remaining in situ. Next the frater was the warming house, completing the north side, on the east side was an undercroft, with monks’ dortor over, next the chapter house, about 60 by 32 feet, divided into three aisles by two rows of clustered columns; and between it and the north transept of the church was a passage leading to the cemetery. The south side of the cloisters, which formed a square of 106 by 102 feet, was occupied by the abbey church, about 160 feet long internally and 60 feet wide, including the aisles, or 110 feet across the transepts; it consisted of presbytery, with flanking chapels, transepts, each with three eastern chapels, nave with aisles, north porch and a large chapel on the south-west partly adjoining the porch, and presumably there was a central tower; the road from Ryde runs straight through the site of the south side of the church, and consequently the foundations of the south chapel of the presbytery and the south wall of the nave could not be examined; various fragments of worked stone and part of the tiled flooring of the chapter house were recovered, and in the modern farm house now standing across the site of the western porch of the church is an elegant triplet of lancets formerly in the church. The abbey was surrendered, c. 1535, by William Rippon the last abbot, the revenues being then estimated at about £184, and it was sold in 37 Hen. VIII. (1545—6) to the Mills family, who demolished the buildings and sold the materials; the site was purchased, temp. Jas. I., by Sir Thomas Fleming kt. Chief Justice of the Kings-Bench, who died 7 Aug. 1613, and was buried at North Stoneham; the male branch of this family failed in the last century, and the property then passed to the descendants of the distinguished antiquary, Browne Willis LL.D., F.S.A, and is now held by John E. A. Willis-Fleming esq. of Chilworth. Quarr Abbey House, the seat of Lady Cochrane, is a handsome mansion of stone and has grounds of 5 acres. John E, A. Willis-Fleming esq. of Chilworth Manor, Romsey, is lord of the manor and chief landowner. The soil is loam and clay; subsoil, clay and gravel. The chief crops are wheat, beans and oats. The area is 1,206 acres of land and 8 of tidal water and 227 of foreshore; rateable value, £4,228; the population in 1891 was 961.
