Historical Description

BINSTED is a large village and parish, 2 miles south-west from Bentley station on the Farnham and Winchester branch of the South Western railway, 4 east-by-north from Alton, in the Eastern division of the county, near the Surrey border, Alton hundred, union, county court district and petty sessional division, rural deanery of Alton (western division), and archdeaconry and diocese of Winchester. The river Wey skirts the parish on the north. The church of St. Cross is an ancient Norman edifice of stone, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles, two chapels, south porch and a western tower with spire containing 6 bells, and a chiming clock, erected to commemorate H.M. Jubilee: in the Westcott chapel there is a recumbent figure of a Knight Templar: in 1875 a stained window was placed at the east end: there are 500 sittings. The register dates from the year 1590. The living is a vicarage with Kingsley annexed, joint net yearly value £500, with residence, in the gift of the Dean and Chapter of Winchester, and held since 1896 by the Rev. William George Gostling Thompson B.D. of the University of the South Tennessee, U.S.A. There is a district church at Rowledge, on the border of the parish. Here are Primitive Methodist, Unsectarian and Wesleyan chapels. Binstead is entitled to send five children to the Grammar school at Holybourne. The Great Lodge, Alice Holt, is the residence of Mrs. Milward; the mansion has been restored and enlarged, and with its extensive gardens and offices is leased by her from the Commissioners of Woods and Forests. Binsted-Wyck is the seat of Mrs. Wickham. This forest, with the nearly adjoining forest of Woolmer, together extending to about 10,000 acres, have been Crown property from time immemorial, and until disafforested some 50 years since were well stocked with deer. The Holt contains some fine timber, chiefly oak, with splendid beeches and yews. The Crown is lord of the manor. The principal landowners are Henry John Dutton esq. of Alresford, the Rev. Augustus George Legge M.A. of Alresford, Edward Cobden, Mrs. Wickham, George Langrish esq. and Mrs. Ellen Wheeler. The soil is malm; subsoil, gravel. The chief crops are corn and hops. The area is 6,901 acres of land and 19 of water; rateable value, £7,256; the population in 1891 was 1,331, including part of Rowledge.

Blacknest is 1 mile east; Alice Holt Wood is a large wood to the east; South Hay, 1 mile south.

National School (mixed), erected in 1873 by voluntary contributions, with teachers’ house, at a cost of about £1,200, for 200 children; average attendance, 120.
