Historical Description

Brading is a small market town of great antiquity, but no trade. The road to it affords a delightful view of the east part of the island. The streets are very clean, and have of late years been paved and lighted.

Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

BRADING is a large parish and small town, with a station on the Isle of Wight railway, 8 miles east from Newport and 4 south from Ryde, at the head of Brading Harbour, an inlet formerly covering several hundred acres, in the liberty of south-east Medina, and in the rural deanery of East Wight, archdeaconry of the Isle of Wight and diocese of Winchester. Sir Hugh Myddelton bart. the constructor of the New River canal in London, expended £7,000, though unsuccessfully, in attempting to confine the waters of the harbour: but the Brading Harbour Company, having succeeded in doing so, have reclaimed about 850 acres, which are now under partial cultivation. A line of railway is completed from the station here to St. Helen’s, and crosses the upper part of the harbour. Brading was incorporated long prior to the date of its 16th century charter, under which it was governed by two bailiffs, a recorder and thirteen jurats, annually chosen at a court leet held on or before the 9th of October, but under the provisions of the Municipal Corporations Act, 1883, this corporation ceased to exist in March, 1886. The church of St. Mary, standing on high ground at the north end of the town, is an ancient edifice of stone in the Transition Norman and Early English styles, and consists of chancel of two bays with aisles or chapels, nave of five bays, aisles, south porch and a western tower with spire built on open arches, which form a porch; in the belfry are 8 bells, four of which were added and the old bells rehung in 1887; the tenor weighs 10 cwt.: the church stands traditionally on the spot where, in A.D. 686, St. Wilfrid, Archbishop of York, coming hither from Selsey, and sailing up Brading Harbour, at length landed and raised the cross: the chancel retains a square-headed piscina and a Transitional stoup, removed hither from the porch: in the chancel is an incised slab, in the centre of which is an effigy representing John de Cherowin, constable of Porchester Castle, circ. 1441; the head, hands and parts of the armour were formerly inlaid with silver; the figure is surmounted by a canopy on which are shields with armorial bearings, and on each side rises a tier of canopied niches with pinnacled buttresses; in these were formerly eight figures, but only six remain perfect, and of these four are supposed to represent SS. Andrew, Lambert, Peter and James: here also is a slab with arms and an inscription to the Rev. Richard Palmer M.A. vicar, d. 1763, and within the sacrarium a brass to the Rev. T. Waterworth B.D. d. 1790; in the north chapel are two altar tombs, the sides of which are ornamented with tracery and roses, and one bears in small panels the inscription, “J’hu haue merci on Wylliam Howlys on hys sowl ame’ mcccccxx.”; the other tomb, inscribed to “Helizabeth his wyf,” is similar; the upper slabs of both are of Purbeck marble: the south or Oglander chapel, which contains several fine tombs of that family, is inclosed by open traceried screens of oak; the chapel has a panelled wood roof, and on the cornice supporting it are 34 emblazoned shields of arms, 17 on each side, and including the coats of Russell, Clerke, Hamond, Strode, Fitzroy and Somerset: all the windows are stained; that at the east end is a memorial to George Oglander esq. ob. 1567, and Alice (Hamond) his wife, and has an inscribed brass below it; the windows on the south side are filled with heraldic shields of the Oglander family, quartered or impaled: on the north side of the chapel is a plain modern altar tomb of huge stone slabs, on which lies the full-sized coloured effigy of a man in plate armour, reclining on his elbow, and on a brass affixed to the tomb is an inscription to Sir John Oglander of Nunwell, deputy governor of Portsmouth, ob. 28th Nov. 1655, and Frances (More) his wife, ob. 12th June, 1644; west of this stands a panelled altar tomb, the four panels of which on the south side inclose sculptured figures in high relief, kneeling, of a knight in armour, with four sons, and his wife with three daughters; surrounding the panels is a border of foliage work, which bears traces of colour: the west end of the tomb has a modern panel exhibiting traces of a painted shield of arms and inscription, and the north side, also panelled, is ornamented with other figures and shields: this tomb, from the number and sex of the children represented, may commemorate the family of the preceding. On the north side of the chapel is another heavy altar tomb, bearing the recumbent effigy of a man bare-headed, but in plate armour and wearing a ruff, the whole being coloured and gilt, and representing William Oglander kt. ob. 27th March, 1608, and Ann (Dillington) his wife; westward of it is a panelled altar tomb, ornamented with roses and blank shields, and covered by a slab of Purbeck marble, but without inscription: above the first mentioned of these tombs is a niche containing a facsimile, in miniature, of the effigy below, and over it an inscription on brass to George, eldest son of Sir John Oglander kt. who died abroad in 1632. On the floor are slabs of large size inscribed to Sir William Oglander, 3rd bart. d. Aug. 1734, and Elizabeth (Strode) his wife, d. 1722; Sir John Oglander, 4th bart. d. 11th May, 1767; Margaret (Cox) his wife, d. 1744, and Frances and Margaret their daughters, d. 1780 and 1786; and to Ann (Brown) wife first of John, 2nd baron Poulet, of Hinton St. George, Somerset, and secondly of Sir John Strode, kt. of Parnham, Dorset: she d. 1710; there is also a marble tablet to Richard Oglander esq. of Fairlie, some time Consul at Tunis, d. 1857, and Caroline (Tulin) his wife, d. 29th June, 1826: in the nave are floor slabs of black marble with arms inscribed to Sir Thomas Knight kt. ob. 1689, and Frances his wife, ob. 1679, and others of this family, 1695—1735, and to the Fitchett family, 1738—42, and on the south wall a brass to the Rev. Legh Richmond, commemorating the centenary of his coming to Brading: on the south side of the chapel, is a fine altar tomb, erected in 1897 to Sir Henry Oglander bart. d. 8 April, 1874, and Louisa, his wife, d. 23 April, 1894; at the angles of the tomb are figures of angels; the brass eagle lectern was presented in 1875 by John, 10th baron Rollo; besides the stained windows in the Oglander chapel there are various others, including the east window, presented by Lady Oglander in memory of her husband, the late Sir Henry Oglander, 7th (and last) bart. d. 1874; two in the south aisle to the Rev. John Glover M.A. vicar, 1862—84, and to Miss Cecilia Scott, and some on the north side: the west window of the tower was the gift of Mr. Thomas Hellyer: the font, a new work, is in the Transition style, the old font now serving as a credence: the church chest of panelled oak is probably Jacobean: over the priest’s doorway in the north chapel is a stone incised with two stepped crosses engrailed: the chancel was restored in 1874 by the Master and Fellows of Trinity College, Cambridge, under the direction of Sir A. W. Blomfield A.R.A, architect, and the rest of the building in 1864, the cost of the late Sir Henry and Lady Oglander, and under the superintendence of Mr. T. Hellyer, architect, of Ryde: on the south side of the churchyard are a number of ancient altar tombs, including two inscribed to Peter Bryers, butler, and Mr. Tobye Kempe, ob. 1637, clarke to Sir John Oglander kt. of Nunwell; and to Robert Stac. ob. 1649; on the east side is a similar tomb to John Howlis, ob. 2nd April, 1675, and one of the same period to Ellen (Harbert), wife of Richard Loveing: close to the path at the east end of the church is the well-known and much-visited grave of “Little Jane,” the “Young Cottager,” and there are other tombs and memorials to Nanny Loosemore, d. Jan. 12, 1871, aged 102; Col. William Joliffe R.M. d. 1854; Lieut. J. H. Peel R.N. d. 1844; Comm. J. W. Bazalgette R.N. d. 1849; Maj. H. H. Warner, 39th regt. d. 1872, and vorious clergy: in the churchyard are the remains of a cross, consisting of part of the shaft rising from a circular base of three steps; on the top is now a sundial, dated 1815, and the shaft is inscribed “I.W. 1714.” The register dates from the year 1547. The living is a vicarage, net income £185, with residence, in the gift of Trinity College, Cambridge, and held since 1884 by the Rev. Edgar Summers B.D. of Trinity College, Cambridge, and rural dean of East Wight. The vicarage, immediately adjoining the churchyard on the east, is surrounded by spacious and pleasant gardens and grounds, and both the house and grounds have been enlarged and greatly improved by the present vicar. Here are Bible Christian and Congregational chapels, and Salvation Army barracks. The Town Hall, standing close to the west end of the churchyard, was rebuilt on its old site in 1875—6, and is a picturesque structure of stone and brick, resting on the south side on open arches, and within this portion, underneath the hall, are kept the ancient stocks and whipping post; at the north end is a lock-up: in the hall is a free library containing 1,400 volumes, and supported in part by private subscriptions: on the west side of the building is a stone panel bearing a representation of the old borough seal-a Tudor rose, with the legend,” The Kyngs Towne of Brading”: near the Town hall are two timber-framed houses, and over the door of one of these appears the inscription, “William Sotcot, 1698.” In a small open space in the middle of the principal street the massive bull ring, to which bulls were formerly tied to be baited, still remains. The Charity Commissioners have sanctioned a scheme for a Town Trust to deal with the income (£70) of the town, which is applied as before to the maintenance of the library and of pumps and lights. The Miss Mary Surgey (Moore) charity amounts to about £35 yearly, the greater portion of which is distributed among the poor, and the remainder in prizes for children of the Board school. The Rev. Legh Richmond M.A. well-known as the author of “The Dairyman’s Daughter” and” The Young Cottager” in his “Annals of the Poor,” was curate in sole charge of this parish and Yaverland from 1797 to 1805; Jane, the young cottager, is buried near the east end of the church, and her grave, and the thatched cottage in which she lived, are visited by strangers from all parts. The parish gun, a piece of brass ordnance bearing the inscription, “John and Robert Owine, Brethren, made this Peso 1549, Brerdynge,” having been presented to the late Sir Henry Oglander bart. is now at Nunwell. Brading, Nunwell and Ashley Downs continue the lofty chain of Midland hills westward: on the conspicuous summit of the last named is a stone pyramid, 20 feet high, erected as a sea mark by the Trinity House in 1795; and within a well-wooded park of 150 acres is Nunwell, the seat of John Henry Oglander esq. J.P., LL.B., F.S.A, and lord of the manor. In 1880 an interesting discovery was made near here by Mr. F. G. Hilton Price F.S.A., F.G.S. of the foundations of a Roman villa, which on excavation has proved to be one of the most important and interesting remains of the kind in the kingdom; many coins of the reigns of Severus (A.D. 197—211), Constans (A.D. 333—350), and Magnentius (A.D. 350—353), and pieces of pottery have been found; several of the chambers can be very clearly traced, and the mosaic pavement of the dining hall and the bath room, and other apartments are remarkably perfect; the whole has been covered in, and is now carefully protected. The charities for distribution amount to £27 yearly. John Henry Oglander esq. who owns the manor, Sir Graham E. W. Graeme Hamond-Graeme bart. and the trustees of the late Col. Francis Henry Atherley (d. 1897) are the principal landowners. The soil is sandy loam; subsoil, sand and day. The chief crops are wheat, barley and oats. The area is 7,737 acres of land and 799 of foreshore and water; rateable value, £14,195; and the population in 1891 was 5,412, including Bembridge and Lake, in this parish.
