Historical Description

BREAMORE or Breamer is a parish, liberty and village on the west bank of the Avon, with a station on the Salisbury and Dorchester section of the London and South Western railway, 8 miles south from Salisbury and 3 north from Fordingbridge, in the New Forest division of the county, hundred, union and county court district of Fordingbridge and Ringwood petty sessional division. The living being a donative, it is not under episcopal jurisdiction, but it is locally contained within the rural deanery of Christchurch and archdeaconry and diocese of Winchester. Breamore is several times named in Domesday Book, and then had a mill. The parish church of St. Mary, a building of flint and stone, dates from an early period, some portions of the present structure being of Early Norman date, and there are other features which indicate a still earlier foundation: it consists of chancel, nave, south porch, with parvise, and a central tower, containing 4 bells: the chancel was restored in 1874, and the church in 1897 by Lady Hulse: there are 250 sittings: in the churchyard and near the porch stands a venerable yew tree. The register dates from the year 1675. The living is a donative, with South Charford annexed, net yearly value £514, with residence, in the gift of and held since 1868 by the Rev. Edward Parker Dew M.A. of Exeter College, Oxford. Here is a Primitive Methodist chapel. John Dodington in 1638 left an annuity of £5 in succession out of a tenement, situate at Sandy Balls, Fordingbridge, on trust to pay aver the Tent to the overseers of Breamore, Fordingbridge, Harbridge and Ringwood respectively for ever, for binding poor children of the several parishes apprentice. Henry Johnson in 1703 left £100 in trust that £5 should yearly be given to apprenticing a poor child of the parish, except in such years as a £5 formerly given should become due, when it should be applied to a poor child of Wood Green. Here was once a priory of Austin Canons, founded by Richard de Redvers, 1st Earl of Devon, in 1132, and dedicated to St. Mary and St. Michael: at the Dissolution its revenues were estimated at £154: during excavations made in 1898 in Priory mead, several stone coffins and traces of the cloister were met with. The manor of Breamore, which formerly belonged to the priory, has been held for many generations by the family of Hulse, now represented by Sir Edward Hulse bart. M.A., D.L., J.P. of Breamore House, a large and handsome mansion in the Elizabethan style, standing in a park of 137 acres, backed by woods which skirt the Salisbury downs: the interior and part of the outer wall were burnt down 19 Oct. 1856, but one wing, forming the oldest portion of the house and dating from 1572, escaped, and the injured portion has been restored by the present owner: near the house is a curious maze or labyrinth, some centuries old. The soil of the parish is loam; subsoil, gravel. There is a large common with grazing land on Breamore downs. The chief crops are wheat, barley, oats and turnips. The area is 3,440 acres of land and 35 of water; rateable value, £3,077; the population in 1891 was 592.

School (mixed), built in 1872, for 160 children; average attendance, 137; there is a house for the master.
