Historical Description

Calbourne, about six miles from Yarmouth, is a pretty retired village, with a pleasant parsonage. Two miles from hence is Swainston House, the seat of Sir J. Barrington, and Newport four miles farther.

CALBOURNE is a parish and village with a station 1 mile north from the village, on the Newport, Yarmouth and Freshwater railway, about 5 miles west-by-south from Newport and 5 south-east from Yarmouth, in the West Medina liberty, rural deanery of West Wight, archdeaconry of the Isle of Wight and diocese of Winchester. This parish includes the ancient chapelry and borough of Newtown. The Caul Bourne rises in the parish. The church of All Saints is a building of stone in the Norman and Gothic styles, and consists of chancel, nave, south aisle, north transept, south and west porches and a tower: the church was thoroughly restored in 1842, at a cost of £2,550, and affords 264 sittings. The register dates from the year 1561. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £379, with residence and 81 acres of glebe, in the gift of the Bishop of Winchester, and held since 1877 by the Rev. John Vicars M.A. of Christ’s College, Cambridge. There are remains of two British villages in the parish. Swainston, the residence of Sir John Stephen Barrington Simeon bart. M.P., D.L., J.P. is a mansion of stone in the Italian style, delightfully situated in a park of 75 acres; Westover, the property of Lord Heytesbury and occupied by Octavius Moulton-Barrett esq. is a modern residence standing in a park of 30 acres, on a gentle declivity at the foot of the Calbourne Downs. Sir J. S. Barrington Simeon bart. M.P. is lord of the manor and principal landowner. The chief crops are wheat, barley, oats, peas and beans. The parish (including Newtown) comprises 6,541 acres of day and chalky soil, which is highly cultivated, and 10 of water, 34 of tidal water and 515 of foreshore; rateable value, £4,876. The population in 1891 was, including part of Newtown, 830, 39 houses and 153 persons having been transferred to this parish from Shalfieet, March 24, 1889, for civil purposes.
