Historical Description
CHALE is a parish and village, 4 ½ miles east from Whitwell and 3 ½ miles north-east from Godshill station, on the Merston Junction and Ventnor railway, 8 ½ miles south-south-west from Newport and 7 miles west of Ventnor, in West Medina liberty, rural deanery of West Wight, archdeaconry of the Isle of Wight and diocese of Winchester. The church of St. Andrew, erected by Hugh Vernon about 1113, is still partly Norman, though little of the original structure now remains: it consists of chancel, nave, south aisle, north and south porches, and an embattled western tower, with pinnacles, containing 5 bells, 2 of which were given by Mr. G. A. Hearn, of New York, the rest being old: there is a monument of white marble to Sir Henry Worsley, who died in 1843, and a number of stained windows, including five presented by Mr. G. A. Hearn: in the churchyard is interred Captain Samuel Walker, of the ill-fated ship” Clarendon,” which, on the homeward-bound passage from the West Indies, was wrecked in Chale Bay, on the 11th October, 1836, when 12 of the crew and all the passengers, 13 in number, perished: there are 300 sittings. The register dates from the year 1679. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £287, with 39 acres and residence, in the gift of the trustees of the late W. Rhodes esq. and held by the Rev. Charles William Heald M.A. of Corpus Christi college, Oxford. The Bible Christian chapel here, built in 1842, was rebuilt in 1884, and has 130 sittings. The Wesleyan chapel, erected in 1888, is a building of stone, and has sittings for about 120 persons. There is also a Mission Hall at Blackgang, erected in 1873, by the late Mr. Charles Reade, and seating about 300. Half a mile from the Church is Blackgang Chine, a tremendous chasm, the sides of which are nearly 500 feet in height, shelving down to the shore, and terminating inland in a projecting rock 40 feet in height, over which falls a small stream: the view from the summit comprises the whole of the coast to the Needles, with the Dorsetshire coast in the distance. Near to the Chine is St. Catherine's Hill, which is upwards of 800 feet above the sea level, and is said to be the highest point in the island: the ancient Manor House, an interesting architectural relic, stands near. The Medina river takes its rise at the foot of this hill, at a place called Hermitage: on the summit is St. Catherine’s Tower, a small building surmounted by an octagonal lantern, being all that now remains of a chapel built here in 1323 by one Walter de Godyton, whose name is still retained in a corrupted form, in that of a farm on the west slope of the hill, called “Gotten Farm.” On the brow of the hill is an elegant column, erected by the late Michael Hoy esq. to commemorate the visit of his Imperial Majesty Alexander I. Emperor of Russia: it is 72 feet high, and visible from the greater part of the island. A military road has been made from Chale Church to Freshwater, a distance of 10 ¼ miles, in connection with the south coast defences. The principal landowners are Lady Mary A. B. Gordon, of North Court, Shorwell, the Rev. Charles Theobald M.A. rector of Lasham, Hants, the trustees of the late Mr. Best, Messrs. Way, Russell, Sprake, Linington and the trustees of the late Mr. Morris. The land is all freehold. The soil is strong loam; subsoil, chalk. The chief crops are wheat, oats and barley; the area is 2,222 acres of land and 54 of foreshore; rateable value, £3,718; the population in 1891 was 607.
Parochial School (mixed & infants), built in 1843, & enlarged in 1895 & 1896, for 160 children; average attendance, mixed 75 & infants 25; & supported in part by an endowment of £22.
