Historical Description

The village of Chilcombe, where a kind of fair is held, previous to the Winchester August fair, on Magdalen hill.

Three miles from hence, on the left of our road, is Titchborne, the property and seat of Sir Henry Titchborne, Bart. a descendant from one of the oldest families in the kingdom, which was seated here before the Conquest. The present mansion-house has been lately erected, and is a handsome edifice.

CHILCOMB is a parish and sequestered and scattered village, situate in a valley, with a station at Winchester, 2 miles south-east, on the Didcot, Newbury and Winchester section of the Great Western railway, 3 miles south-east from the Winchester station of the London and South Western railway, and 69 from London, in the Western division of the county, hundred of Fawley, Winchester petty sessional division, county court district and union and in the rural deanery, archdeaconry and diocese of Winchester: the river Itchen flows through a portion of the parish.

Under the provisions of section 36 (sub-section 2) of the Local Government Act, 1894” (56 & 57 Vict. ch. 73), Chilcomb has been divided into two civil parishes, named. Chilcomb Without and Chilcomb Within, the latter being that portion of the old parish included in the Municipal borough of Winchester. The church of St. Andrew, at Upper Chilcomb, is a small building of flint with stone dressings, in the Early Norman style, consisting of chancel and nave, and a low wooden tower containing 2 bells: there are 84 sittings. The register dates from the year 1556. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £220, with residence and 11 acres of glebe, in the gift of the Bishop of Winchester, and held since 1891 by the Rev. Gerrard Thomas Andrewes M.A. of Merton College, Oxford and surrogate. All Saints’ chapel of ease, at Highcliffe, erected in 1890—1, at a cost of £3,026, is an edifice of rough flint and red brick, in the Early English style, consisting at present only of chancel, nave, and north aisle and affords 475 sittings. St. Catharine’s hill is much, frequented by visitors. The Victoria Hospital for infectious diseases, built by the Winchester Corporation in 1887, is on the Chilcomb Downs (see Winchester), adjoining is the Winchester Girls’ High School Sanatorium. Lime of superior quality is burnt here. George Parker esq. who is lord of the manor and the Dean and Chapter of Winchester are the principal landowners. The soil is calcareous loam; subsoil, chalk. The chief crops are wheat, barley, oats and turnips. The area of the old parish was 2,299 acres; rateable value of Chilcomb Without, £4,371. The population in 1891, 1,052.
