Historical Description

DEANE is a parish and pleasant village, on the road from Basingstoke to Whitchurch, 2 miles east from Overton station and 1 ¼ south-west from Oakley station on the Andover and Salisbury branch of the South Western railway, and 6 west from Basingstoke, in the Northern division of the county, Basingstoke union, petty sessional division and county court district. Overton hundred, rural deanery of Basingstoke and archdeaconry and diocese of Winchester. The church of All Saints, rebuilt in 1818, is a small edifice, consisting of chancel and nave, south porch and a western embattled tower with 4 pinnacles containing 5 bells: the east window contains Belgian glass: there are monuments to the Bramston, Wither and Harwood families and others: the church was reseated in 1865, and in 1895 various improvements were made, at a total cost of £450; and it now affords 100 sittings. The register dates from the year 1659. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £200, with 76 acres of glebe, and residence, in the gift of W. W. B. Beach esq. and held since 1893 by the Rev. William Francis Dashwood Lang M.A. of Wadham College, Oxford. The father of Miss Jane Austen the authoress was rector of Deane for some years. W. Bramston left in 1826 £11 yearly for the ornamental repairs of this church. There is a charge on the manor of Ashe of about £70 yearly for the support of two aged persons of this parish in the almshouse at Basingstoke. There is also a clothing charity for this and the adjoining parish of Church Oakley, which is usually distributed on St. Thomas’ day. Oakley Hall, the property of William Wither Bramston Beach esq. M.P. but now the residence of William Oswald Gilchrist esq. is situated close to the South Western railway, which intersects the park: the mansion was built in 1795 upon the site of the former edifice, and altered in 1860; it is situated in the midst of an extensive and well-wooded park, covering about 490 acres, which extends into Church Oakley parish. Deane House, situated in a well-wooded park of 70 acres and adjoining the church, is a building in the Early Elizabethan style, dating back to the 16th century, and is the property of W. W. B. Beach esq. M.P. and is now occupied by Capt. T. G. Best J.P., W. W. B. Beach esq. M.P. who is lord of the manor and principal landowner, Lieut.-Col. Sir Richard Nelson Rycroft bart. of Kempshott Park, owns some land also.

The soil is gravelly, but the high lying land is stiff clay; subsoil, chalk, and gravelly in that portion known as the Bottoms. The chief crops are wheat, barley, oats and roots. The area is 1,557 acres, including woods; rateable value, £3,986; the population in 1891 was 121.

Infants’ School, with residence, built in 1879, for 56 children; supported by W. W. B. Beach esq. M.P.; average attendance, 22.

The elder children attend the school at Church Oakley.
