Historical Description

DUMMER and KEMPSHOTT is a parish and village, 5 miles south-west from Basingstoke station on the London and South Western main line to Southampton, and 13 from Winchester, in the Northern division of the county, petty sessional division, union, highway district and county court district of Basingstoke, hundred of Bermondspit, rural deanery of Basingstoke, and archdeaconry and diocese of Winchester. The church of AH Saints dates from the 13th century, and probably stands on the site of the earlier church, which, according to Domesday Book, existed in 1086; it consists of chancel and nave, western porch of the 15th century, and a wooden belfry, containing 5 bells; the pulpit of carved oak and a curious baldachino immediately to the west of the chancel-arch, which formerly covered the rood or crucifix, are both of the 15th century; traces of the rood loft remain in the north and south walls: in the church are some curious brasses; one records in Leonine or rhymed Latin verse the memory of William At Moore, alias Dummer, and Ellen (Dummer), his wife, lady of the manor of Dummer, both of whom died in 1427: by her first husband, Sir Nicholas At Moore, she was ancestress of William At Moore, alias Dummer, who died in 1593, and lies buried beneath a stone whereon is a brass in beautiful preservation, inscribed with his arms and a curious English rhymed epitaph, while in the adjacent wall his effigy appears, together with that of his wife and infant son who died before him: with him the long line of Dummer of Dummer, who had held the lordship of the manor from the reign of Henry I. ended: the chancel was restored in 1894: there is a stained window, erected in 1891 to Miss Dunbar, and another, placed in 1898 to Capt. C. Michael Rycroft: there are about 180 sittings. The register dates from the year 1540. The living is a rectory, gross yearly value, net income £184, including 83 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of J. Knight esq. and held since 1882 by the Rev. George Jones M.A. of Emmanuel College, Cambridge. Here is a Primitive Methodist chapel, built in 1862 and enlarged in 1867. The Rev. Wm. Marriott, then rector, left in 1606 £1 yearly for the purchase of 3 Bibles, to be given away on Easter Monday, and there are other charities of £2 a year for the relief of the poor. The Rev. George Whitefield M.A. the friend and coadjutor of John and Charles Wesley, had temporary charge of this parish. In the summer of 1888 an ancient burial urn was discovered near Dummer clump; further excavations brought to light about 12 vases of very slightly baked clay containing burnt human remains and bones; on one vase was placed a food vessel, once no doubt containing provisions for the long journey to the other world: the excavations were made by the curators of the Southampton and Breading museums, and specimens are in the Institute and in the museum at Reading: the vases are of very high antiquity of the Stone age, and numerous flints were found in the adjoining field. The manor house, the ancient seat of the Dummer family, and now the property and residence of Sir Richard Nelson Rycroft bart. stands near the church, embosomed in trees: the thickness of its walls attests its age, and parts of it are probably as old as the 14th century, though it has received frequent additions: it was sold by the Terry family, together with a considerable part of the parish, in 1864 to the Rev. T. J. Torr, and again 10 years later to the late Sir Nelson Rycroft bart. Sir R. Nelson Rycroft bart. is lord of the manor and principal landowner, the other landowner being the Rev. Thomas Joseph Torr M.A. The soil is clay, with a subsoil of chalk. The chief crops are wheat, barley, oats and turnips and pasture land. The area is 2,774 acres, of which about 120 are wood; rateable value, £2,359; the population in 1891 was 352 in the ecclesiastical and 426 in the civil parish. Part of Winslade parish, with a population in of 74, was by Local Government Board Order, No. 10,105, Dec. 8, 1879, transferred to this parish.

National School (mixed), originally founded by John Millingate esq. in 1610, rebuilt in 1815, & enlarged in 1846, when a teacher’s residence was added, & again enlarged in 1870, & again in 1893; it has two endowments, amounting to £14 a year, & will hold 100 children; average attendance, 67.
