ELING is a parish and village, near the head of the Southampton Water, on the western side, one mile south from Totton station on the Southampton and Dorchester section of the London and South Western railway, 5 west from Southampton, 6 ½ south from Romsey, and 86 miles from London, in the New Forest division of the county, hundred of Redbridge, New Forest union, Lyndhurst district of the Lymington and New Forest petty sessional division, Southampton county court district, rural deanery of Lyndhurst, and archdeaconry and diocese of Winchester. The parish of Eling has been divided into five parishes, viz. Eling, Copythorne (formerly North Eling), Netley Marsh, Marchwood and Colbury. Eling parish now only contains the villages of Eling and Totton. The church of St. Mary, situated upon a spur of Eling hill and overlooking Southampton Water, is an ancient edifice of flint and stone of Early Norman date, consisting of chancel of two bays, nave of three bays, aisles, south porch and embattled western tower, containing a clock and 6 bells: in 1865 the chancel, south aisle and greater portion of the nave were rebuilt in the Early English style, and since 1870 the interior has been thoroughly restored and reseated, at a cost of £500: the reredos of carved stone includes a representation of the “Nativity,” and there are five stained windows: the church affords 600 sittings. The register dates from the year 1538. The living is a vicarage with Totton annexed, net yearly value £380, including 200 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of J. E, Ward esq. and held since 1897 by the Rev. Thomas Thistle M.A. of Corpus Christi college, Oxford. A fair is held at Eling on July 5th.
