Historical Description

Ellengham. Some remains of an ancient cell may be now discovered, forming part of the nave of the church; in which there is a fine painting of the day of judgement, given to the parish by the late Lord Windsor. This picture was brought from Cadiz in the year 1702, having been taken there amongst other pillage by the troops employed in a successful expedition against that place.

A plain stone in the churchyard covers the remains of Dame Alicia Lisle, who was condemned to be executed in her old age by the infamous Jefferies, on a charge of concealing known rebels in her mansion at Moyle's Court; she was beheaded in 1685, but the sentence was reversed at the Restoration.

Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

ELLINGHAM is a parish on the road from Ringwood to Pordingbridge and near the river Avon, 3 miles north from Ringwood station and 4 ½ south from Fordingbridge station, both on, the London and South Western railway, in the New Forest division of the county, Ringwood hundred, union and petty sessional division, county court district of Fordingbridge, rural deanery of Christchurch, and archdeaconry and diocese of Winchester. The church of All Saints, now called St. Mary’s, is an edifice of stone in mixed styles, consisting of chancel and nave, south porch and a western belfry of wood, containing one bell: it retains a good rood-screen of oak and monuments to Alice Beconsawe, 1622, and William Mist, 1780, and a picture of the “Last Judgment,” by Henry Goltzius, a Fleming (1558—1617), brought from Cadiz in 1702 by Admiral Lord Windsor, and given to this church as an altar-piece: some tombs of priors remain in the chancel, and there is also an old square canopied pew: the church was thoroughly restored in 1884—5, when a north vestry with organ chamber was added by the late Earl of Normanton, at a cost of £2,500: the church will seat about 200 persons. In the churchyard is the tomb of Alicia Lady Lisle, who being accused of harbouring rebels in her house, Moyles Court, after the battle at Sedgemoor, 6 July, 1685, was beheaded at Winchester, 2 Sept. in that year, although she had a son in the kings army in that battle: she was the widow of Colonel John Lisle, one of the judges of Charles I. who in 1658 was made a peer by Cromwell, under the title of Viscount Lisle, and retiring to the Continent on the eve of the Restoration was assassinated at Lausanne in Aug. 1664. The register of baptisms dates from the year 1595; marriages and burials, 1596. The registers have been restored and rebound. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £120, including 3 acres of glebe and residence, restored in 1883, in the gift of the Earl of Normanton, and held since 1892 by the Rev. Frederick Stephen Trevor-Garrick M.A. of St. Catherine’s College, Cambridge. Here was once a priory, founded in 1163 by W. de Solariis and dedicated to St. Mary; it was attached to the abbey of St. Sauveur le Vicomte, and on the dissolution of alien priories in the reign of Henry VI. the revenues, together with the titles of the parish, were annexed to Eton College, from which they were purchased by the late Earl of Normanton. Lady Elizabeth Tipping, in 1687, left a piece of land called “Venge,” of 1 ½ acres, and a piece of land called “The Butts,” of half an acre, both situated in a meadow called “Wide meadow,” now producing £4 yearly, to be given to the poor on St. Thomas's day: Mr. Colthurst’s trust of £333, in the £2 ¾ per Cents, now (1898) producing £8 17s. 4d. for the poor, is vested in the vicar; and there are three almshouses, founded by Mrs. Harding, but not endowed. Moyles Court, the ancient seat of the Lisle family, and now the residence of Frederic Fane esq. is the property of the Earl of Normanton, lord of the manor and principal landowner. The soil is sand and gravel; subsoil, gravel. The chief crops are wheat, barley, oats and turnips. The area is 2,537 acres of land and 22 of water; rateable value £2,156; the population in 1891 was 260. Part of the parish is detached and situated in the New Forest.

Rockford is 1 mile east; Blashford Green is on a brook of the Avon, three-quarters of a mile south. Highwood and part of Linwood are also in this parish.

National School, Rockford (mixed), with residence for mistress, was enlarged in 1893, for 56 children; average attendance, 49.
