Historical Description

ELVETHAM is a scattered village and parish, 2 ½ miles north-west from Fleet station on the London and South Western railway, 5 north-east from Odiham and 10 west-by-north from Basingstoke, in the Northern division of the county, hundred of Odiham, Hartley Wintney union, Basingstoke petty sessional division and county court district, rural deanery of Aldershot, and archdeaconry and diocese of Winchester. The church of the Blessed Virgin Mary, completely restored and enlarged by the 4th Lord Calthorpe in 1840—41, at a cost of £3,000, is an edifice in the Norman style consisting of chancel, nave, south porch, and a tower with pinnacles and spire containing one bell: in 1872 stalls for the choir were provided: three handsome candelabra were the gift of the Hon. Misses Calthorpe, and in 1889 a reredos was erected by the Hon. Isabel Calthorpe to the memory of her sister: there are 200 sittings. The register dates from the year 1638. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £170, with 12 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of Lord Calthorpe, and held since 1876 by the Rev. William Gill L.Th. Durham. The small church at Hartford Bridge, erected in 1876, at a cost of £250, is of timber, and consists of chancel and nave. The water near Hartford Bridge is strongly impregnated with iron. Lord Calthorpe has had a new water supply laid on from the plantation at Star hill fot the benefit of the inhabitants. The charities amount to about £87 yearly, for bread and clothing. Lord Calthorpe D.L., J.P, is lord of the manor and principal landowner: his seat, Elvetham House, is a handsome modern mansion, beautifully situated in a well-wooded park of 300 acres; it was formerly the seat of the Seymours, Earls of Hertford, one of whom here entertained Queen Elizabeth and her suite for four days: the late Lord Calthorpe thoroughly restored this noble residence. The soil is various; subsoil, sand and gravel. The chief crops are wheat, barley, oats, roots and clover. The area is 3,271 acres of land and 7 of water; rateable value, £5,990; the population in 1891 was 418.

National Schools (boys, girls & infants), were built (boys) in 1844 & (girls) in 1848, with residence for the master & mistress, by the late Lord Calthorpe, at a cost of £1,850, & are solely supported by the present lord; the school will hold 54 boys, 38 girls & 32 infants; average attendance, boys 33, girls 30 & infants 25.
