Historical Description

EVERSLEY is a village and large and scattered parish, 5 ½ miles north from Winchfield station on the London and South Western railway, 3 from Wellington College station on the South Eastern railway, 5 from Wokingham station on both the foregoing lines and 14 north-east from Basingstoke, in the Northern division of the county, hundred of Holdshott, Hartley Wintney union, Basingstoke county court district, Odiham petty sessional division, rural deanery of Aldershot, and archdeaconry and diocese of Winchester. The church of St. Mary the Virgin is a structure of brick in the Transition style, and consists of chancel, nave of six bays, aisIe and an embattled western tower with pinnacles, containing 2 bells: there are four stained windows several monuments and tablets and a recumbent figure in the chancel to Dame Marianne Cope, who died in 1862. This parish will ever be memorable as having been the scene of the clerical teaching of the Rev. Charles Kingsley M.A. Regius Professor of Modern History in the University of Cambridge: he was ordained to the curacy in 1842 and was appointed to the rectory by Sir John Cope bart. in 1844; here he wrote most of the works with which he has enriched English literature: he remained rector here until his death, on the 23rd of January, 1875, aged 55, and his grave in the churchyard is marked by a white marble cross, placed there by his widow, with the inscription, “Amavimus, amamus, amabimus in 1876 the church was thoroughly restored at a cost of £1,200 as a memorial to Canon Kingsley: a new organ was provided in 1886 at a cost of £150: there are 200 sittings. The living is a rectory, net income £405, with 113 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of Sir Anthony Cope bart. and held since 1886 by the Rev. Arthur Lawrence B.A. of St. Mary Hall, Oxford. Bramshill House, the seat of Lieut.-Col. Sir Anthony Cope bart. lord of the manor and principal landowner of this parish, is a large mansion, in a well-wooded park of 600 acres containing a lake. The soil is gravel and loam; subsoil, gravel. The chief crops are wheat, oats and barley. The area of Eversley is 3,127 acres of land and 14 of water; rateable value, £3,967; area of Bramshill, 2,085 of land and 33 of water; rateable value, £1,089; the population in 1891 was-of Eversley, 755, and the united tithing of Great Bramshill and Little Bramshill, 143; total, 903; now (1898) about 1,000.
