Civil & Ecclesiastical Jurisdiction
Historical Description
EXTON is a parish and small village on the Meon river, adjoining Corhampton and Meon Stoke, 5 miles north-east from Bishop’s Waltham terminal station of a branch of the London and South Western Railway, and 10 north from Fareham, in the Eastern division of the county, hundred of Meon Stoke, Droxford union and petty sessional division, Bishop’s Waltham county court district, rural deanery of Bishop’s Waltham and archdeaconry and diocese of Winchester. The church of SS. Peter and Paul is a small edifice of stone in the Early English and later styles, consisting of chancel and nave, south porch, and a small turret with shingled spire at the west end, containing 2 bells: it was nearly rebuilt in 1847, at the expense of the late Miss Touchett and Mrs. Harington, and contains three tablets to the Young family, dated 1686 and 1737, and one with a curious chronogram to Dr. James Young, dean of Winchester: there is a tablet to the Henslow family, dated 1698: the chancel, which inclines considerably towards the south, retains its original piscina. In 1892 the church underwent a complete restoration, at a cost of £600: there are 200 sittings. The registers date from the year 1579. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £245, with 8 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of the Bishop of Winchester, and held since 1889 by the Rev. Raphael Edward William Verini M.A. of Hertford College, Oxford. Old Winchester Hill, 2 miles east, on which are many barrows, is celebrated for having benn one of the spots on which Caesar encamped: a coin of the Seventh Legion, picked up on this hill, is now in the possession of the family of the late Rev. C. J. Hume M.A. formerly rector of Meon Stoke. William Woods esq. of Warnford Park, who is lord of the manor, Walter Long esq. J.P. of Preshaw Park, and Lieut.-Col. Philip Arthur Pleydall Bouverie-Campbell-Wyndham, of Corhampton, are the principal landowners. The soil is chalk and clay; subsoil, gravel, chalk and stone. The chief crops are wheat, oats and barley. The area is 3,567 acres; rateable value, £2,385; the population in 1891 was 238 in the ecclesiastical and 285 in the civil parish.
Part of Corhampton parish, with a population in of 47, was transferred by Local Government Board Order No. 16,412, dated March 24, 1894, to this parish.
Church of England Endowed Schools, for the parishes of Exton & Corhampton, built here in 1871, chiefly at the expense of the late R. King Wyndham & W. J. Long esqrs. & the late Mr. F. Pratt, of West Meon, at a cost of £328 1s. for about 100 children; average attendance, 62; with this school is incorporated the endowed school formerly existing at Corhampton.
