Historical Description

Fareham, a market town, consisting of 596 houses, and 3,325 inhabitants. The houses are tolerably well built; and during the summer season this town is much frequented for the purpose of sea-bathing, and a commodious bathing-house has been lately erected. The town is governed by a bailiff, two constables, and two ale-conners, who regulate all matters relative to weights, measures, &c. There is a good market on Wednesdays.

Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

FAREHAM (called in Domesday Book “Fernham”) is a parish, market town, seaport, and the head of a union, at the head of a deep inlet of the sea, forming the western branch of Portsmouth Harbour, with a station on the London and South Western railway, which is also the junction of a branch to Gosport and Stokes Bay, this line being carried over the extreme end of Portsmouth Harbour by a lofty viaduct of 17 brick arches. In 1889 the station was reconstructed in connection with a new line opened in that year between Netley and Fareham, and affording an alternative route between Southampton and Portsmouth. The town is 84 miles by rail, 72 by road from London, 9 north-west from Portsmouth, 17 ¾ couth from Winchester, 18 west from Chichester and 12 south-south-east from Southampton, in the Southern division of the county, hundred and petty sessional division of its name, county court district of Portsmouth, rural deanery of Alverstoke, and archdeaconry and diocese of Winchester.

Fareham returned one member to the Parliaments of 1306—7, but afterwards the borough petitioned to be excused, on account of the expense. The “Public Health Act, 1848,” (11 & 12 Vict. c. 63) was adopted here September 18, 1849, and the government of the town was vested in a Board of Health of 9 members; but tinder the provisions of the “Local Government Act, 1894,” the Urban District Council is now the local authority.

The town consists principally of one street, about a mile in length, running east and west, the High street diverging from the main street towards the north; there are several other good streets, the Osborn road and Southampton road, which runs parallel to it, being preferred for private residences. The town is well drained, lighted with the electric light by the Fareham Urban Council, and the streets are macadamized and paved. There is a good supply of pure water pumped from wells in the chalk formation of Portsdown hill; the works, established in 1859, now belong to the Urban Council, and include a reservoir capable of holding 120,000 gallons. There are quays on the harbour which can be approached by vessels of 300 tons.

The ancient parish church of St. Peter, with the exception of the chancel and tower, was taken down in 1812, The existing church, erected on the removal of the old fabric, and since altered and enlarged, consists of chancel, with chapel, nave, and a tower containing 8 bells, rehung in 1883, when two new bells, cast by Messrs. John Warner and Sons, of London, were added: the church was partially restored in 1888, at a cost of £6,017, when a new chancel in the Early English style was built, and the old 13th century chancel restored as a side chapel, under the direction of Sir Arthur Blomfield kt. A.R.A., F.S.A.: the alabaster pulpit is a memorial to the Rev. W. S. Dumergue. a former vicar: in 1889 a stained window was erected at the east end of the old chancel in memory of Admiral Carter; and in 1891 the east window is a memorial to two former vicars, and there are several others: in 1892 a Reredos in opus sectile, the work of the Misses Powell, of Greyfriars, was given by H. F. Rawstorne esq. in memory of Mrs. Rawstorne. The register dates from the year 1558. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £180, with 5 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of the Bishop of Winchester, and held since 1885 by the Rev. Thirlwall Gore Browne M.A. of Emmanuel College, Cambridge, and chaplain of Fareham union.

Holy Trinity church, erected from funds bequeathed in the will of the late Lady Thompson, and to which a district was assigned in 1835, is an edifice of brick, with stone dressings, in the Gothic style, and consists of small chancel, nave, aisles, north and south porches, and an embattled western tower with spire, added in 1837 and containing a clock and 2 bells: the chancel windows are stained, and there are memorial tablets to Vice-Admiral Sir Charles Thompson bart. M.P-who died March 17th, 1799, Jane (Selby) his wife, and their youngest son, the Rev. Sir Henry Thompson bart. d. July 1868: the church was restored in 1889, at a cost of £510, and affords 700 sittings. The register dates from the year 1836. The Catholic chapel, in Hartlands road, dedicated to the Sacred Heart, was founded in 1873, and rebuilt in 1878. The Congregational chapel is in West street and has 500 sittings. The Industrial Home at Wallington for girls between the ages of 12 and 14 years, first established in 1869 by Lady Larcom, is now under the management of a committee of ladies, appointed by the Church of England Central Society for providing Homes for waifs and strays, to which society the institution was transferred in 1884. The object is to train servants for housework, laundry and cooking. There is a large laundry attached, and three laundry women are employed. The girls, in 1898 numbering 32, are trained for domestic service, and subscribers can have servants from the home. With the exception of a few subscriptions, the home is self-supporting.
