Historical Description

Fordingbridge, formerly a market-town, and according to Domesday Book it had at the time of the survey a church and two mills. It is situated on the banks of the river Avon, over which it has a good stone bridge, where anciently was the ford from whence it derives its name.

There is a small manufactory of checks and bed-ticks, and a calico printing-ground at this place; the number of inhabitants appears to amount to 2,335.

On a lofty summit called God's Hill, formerly Godmanscape, about a mile to the northeast of Fordingbridge, there is an ancient fortification or camp, having a double trench thrown up on one side, and the other defended by the steepness of the hill, which is overgrown with oaks.

Four miles from Fordingbridge, on the left of our road, is Moyle's Court, an ancient seat of the Lisle family. The house is a handsome building, standing in a small but well-planted park.

Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

FORDINGBRIDGE is a small town and parish, and the head of a union and county court district, on the read from Bournemouth and Christchurch to Salisbury, with a station on the Bournemouth and Salisbury section of the London and South Western railway, and is 6 ¼ miles north from Ringwood, 11 south from Salisbury and 97 from London by rail, in the New Forest division of the county, hundred of the same name, Ringwood petty sessional division, and in the rural deanery of Christchurch and archdeaconry and diocese of Winchester. The town is pleasantly situated, chiefly on the west bank of the Upper-Avon, which is here spanned by a handsome stone bridge of seven arches, and is near the borders of the New Forest, and nearly midway between Salisbury and Christchurch. In Domesday Book the town is mentioned under the name of Forden and is stated to have contained a church and two mills, The town is lighted with gas from works belonging to a company. The church of St. Mary is an edifice in the Early English, Early Decorated, and later styles, consisting of chancel, with a chapel or aisle on north side, of the 13th century, nave of four bays; aisles, north and south porches, and a fine embattled north-eastern tower containing a clock and 6 bells: the main structure of the church is Early English and Decorated: the tower is Perpendicular and the windows have been altered to conform to that style: the roof of the north chancel chapel is of chestnut wood elaborately carved: it bears a marked resemblance to that of the nave of the church at Bere Regis, in Dorsetshire, and is probably the work of the same hand: there is an inscribed mural brass to William Bulkeley esq. Jane, his wife, and eight children, dated 1568, and two stained windows to Major Brice, who died 23rd August, 1876, and his widow: there are sittings for 1,039 persons. An Early English font, found in the Vicarage grounds, has been placed in the churchyard The register dates from the year 1642. The living is a vicarage, with the rectory of Ibsley annexed, joint net yearly value £340, including 7 ½ acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of King's College, Cambridge, and held since 1879 by the Rev. William James Boys M.A. late fellow of that college, and surrogate. The Catholic church, built in 1872, is dedicated to Our Lady of the Seven Dolours: there are also Congregational and Wesleyan chapels, and a meeting house for the Society of Friends and the Brethren. John Dodington, in 1638, left an annuity of £5 yearly, arising from a rent charge to be held on trust by the overseers of Breamore, Fordingbridge, Harbridge and Ringwood respectively for ever, for the purpose of apprenticing poor children of these several parishes. Catherine Eycott Bulkeley in 1801 left £200 in the 3 Per Cent, Consols, towards the support of the church Sunday school. The Victoria Rooms, Bridge street, erected in 1874, comprise a red brick building, containing two large rooms, used for the purposes of the county court and for public meetings. The Town Hall, High street, erected in 1879, is a structure of red brick in the Gothic style, and has a large room in the rear, suitable for concerts and lectures, and holding 450 persons; in the centre of the front is a dock fixed by public subscription. There are several good inns in the town. A market, formerly held on Friday, is now discontinued, but an annual fair is held on the 9th of September. A considerable trade is carried on in the spinning of flax and the manufacture of sailcloth and canvas: here are also two breweries. A police station was erected in 1857. In the neighbourhood, and chiefly at Godshill, are the remains of several ancient encampments. Burgate House, the seat of Mrs, Coventry is pleasantly situated on the Avon in grounds of 100 acres, Packham House, the seat of Admiral the Hon. Fitzgerald Algernon Charies Foley J.P. stands in grounds of 50 acres. Charles Glynn Prideaux-Brune esq. of Padstow, Cornwall, who is lord of the manor, the trustees of the late John Coventry esq. Eyre Coote esq. of West Park, Rockburne, Salisbury, Sir Edward Hulse bart. of Breamore, and the Earl of Normanton are the principal landowners. The soil is of a mixed character; subsoil, gravel, clay and sand. The chief crops are wheat, barley, oats, turnips and roots. The town contains 543 acres; the entire parish, 6,207 acres of land and 96 of water; rateable value, £12,794; the population in 1891 was 3,191, including 828 in Hyde, and 46 officers and inmates in the workhouse.
