Historical Description

FROXFIELD is a village and parish, pleasantly situated, 4 miles north-west from Petersfield station on the London and South Western railway, in the Eastern division of the county, hundred of East Meon, Petersfield union, petty sessional division and county court district, rural deanery of Petersfield and archdeaconry and diocese of Wincheste. The church of St. Peter at High Cross, erected in 1862, at a cost of £2,300, on a site presented by John Silvester esq. is a building of flint, with stone dressings, in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, nave, north aisle, vestry, north porch and a tower on the north-west, with octagonal spire, and containing 6 bells and a clock, presented in 1881 by the late J. Silvester esq. who also gave a new bell and defrayed the cost of re-casting another: the organ was provided in 1879 at a cost of £250: the Norman piers, capitals and stones of three of the arches of the arcade were brought from the old church at Froxfield Green and reconstructed. In 1894 a new reredos, altar table and choir stalls were provided: there are 350 sittings. The register dates from the year 1545. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £202, in the gift of William Nicholson esq. D.L. and held since 1878 by the Rev. John Hosegood M.A. of Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge. The church of St. Peter on the Green, built in 1887 on the site of the chancel of the old church, at a cost of £1,250, defrayed by William Nicholson esq. of Basing Park, is an edifice of flint with Bath stone dressings in the Early English style, and consists of chancel, nave, and a western bell cot with shingled spire, containing one bell: the monuments from the old chancel have been transferred to the present building. The Wesleyan chapel here was opened in Sept. 1851. An earthwork or vallum, which crosses this parish from south-east to north-west, is supposed to have formed part of the boundary which separated the kingdoms of Wessex and Susses. A mile south of the Green is the site of a Roman encampment, where various interesting remains have been discovered. Stoner Hill, from which the sea is visible through gaps in the South Downs, is a lofty eminence, rising abruptly from the valley of Steep, and overlooking a valley of considerable extent. The whole of this parish is considerably above the level of the surrounding country and abounds in picturesque views; the bold woody acclivities rising from the north side of the valleys, and the upland lawns are here called hangers (hanging woods), and in these sylvan beauties the bills on that side are remarkably rich. Basing Park, the seat of William Nicholson esq. D.L., J.P. extends over 450 acres of richly wooded land: the mansion, which is in the Classic style, is approached from the London road through a long avenue of pines; near the park are extensive buildings for a model farm. Broadhanger, the seat of Mrs. Greenwood, occupies an elevated situation, overlooking the hangers which sweep down into the vale of Langrish. The Ecclesiastical Commissioners are lords of the manor. The principal landowners are William Nicholson esq. Messrs. John Silvester, Daniel Darrell and John Harmsworth and Alexander D. Lang esq. of Hawkley, but many of the farmers occupy their own land. The soil varies from a stiff clay to a light vegetable loam; subsoil, chalk. The chief crops are wheat, barley and oats. The area is 4,909 acres; rateable value, £3,330; the population in the civil parish in 1891 was 668, including part of Langrish, and in the ecclesiastical, 642.

Endowed Elementary School.-A scheme for the management of the school was obtained in 1875, & new school rooms & master’s residence were built in 1876 at a cost of about £1,500, part of which was provided for by the endowment, but chiefly by voluntary subscriptions; the income from the endowment is about £30 yearly & is applied at the discretion of the governing body, which consists of 7 members, the vicar of the parish & the owner of Basing Park being ex-officio, three others are elected by the vestry for a term of five years & there are two co-optative governors elected for a term of 7 years; the school (mixed), was built for 130 children; average attendance, 86.
