Historical Description

HAMBLEDON is a parish and large village, 9 miles north-west of Havant station and 8 north of Cosham station, both on the London and South Western railway, 8 miles south-east from Bishop’s Waltham, 10 west from Petersfield and 12 north from Portsmouth, in the Eastern division of the county, Hambledon hundred, Droxford union and petty sessional division, Bishop’s Waltham county court district, Droxford police district, rural deanery of Petersfield and archdeaconry and diocese of Winchester. The church of SS. Peter and Paul is an edifice in the Norman and Early English styles, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles, and a western tower, with pinnacles, containing a clock and 6 bells: the high altar was dedicated 16th November, 1334, by Adam de Orleton, then Bishop of Winchester: there is a memorial window to John Balderson Barkworth esq. and several other stained windows: the church was restored in 1876 at a cost of £2,611, and affords 600 sittings. The register commences in 1650. The living is a vicarage, average net yearly value £380, with 101 acres of glebe, in the gift of the Lord Chancellor, and held since 1897 by the Rev. Henry Castle Floud B.A. of Wadham College, Oxford. The charities for distribution amount to £29 17s. yearly. The kennels of the Hambledon Hunt are in Droxford parish. There are barrows on the neighbouring downs. The country is richly wooded and very picturesque. Speltham Hill is a favourite resort of picnic parties from Portsmouth and other places in the summer season. Fairfield House, the residence of Captain Edward Adderly, about half a mile north-east, has extensive lawns and grounds, and commands fine views to the south and west.

West End, 2 miles north, is the residence of John Alexander Wilson esq. and Whitedale House, of Mrs. Charnock. The Ecclesiastical Commissioners are lords of the manor. The principal landowners are Winchester College, Mrs. Charnock, Capt. T. D. Butler and the Ecclesiastical Commissioners. The soil varies from a light chalky soil, with little subsoil in the north and north-east, to a still clay with stiff clay for subsoil in the south. The chief crops are wheat, barley and oats. The area is 9,446 acres; rateable value, £9,736; the population in of the civil parish in 1891 was 2,026 and of the ecclesiastical, 1,181.

A School Board of 5 members was formed 8 August, 1872.
