Historical Description

HEADLEY is a large parish and village near the borders of Surrey and Sussex, 4 ½ miles north from Liphook station on the direct Portsmouth line of the London and South Western railway, and 8 south from Farnham, in the Eastern division of the county, Alton hundred, union and petty sessional division, Farnham county court district, and in the rural deanery of Petersfield and archdeaconry and diocese of Winchester. The air is remarkably dry and salubrious, and the water of great purity. The river Wey and a stream called “Dead Water” flow through the parish. The church of All Saints, rebuilt, with the exception of the tower, in 1859, is an edifice of stone in the Decorated style, consisting of chancel, nave, north porch, vestry and a square tower containing 2 bells: the stained east window is a memorial to the Rev. Joseph Ballantine Dykes M.A. rector, 1848 until his death, 28 March, 1872: a new organ, costing about £300, was placed in the church in 1885: there are 350 sittings. The register dates from the year 1530. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £480, with residence, in the gift of the Provost and Fellows of Queen’s College, Oxford, and held since 1872 by the Rev. Wallis Hay Laverty M.A. and late fellow of that college. There is an iron mission church at Greyshott. In the village are Congregational and Bible Christian chapels, each holding 200 persons, and at Standford an iron chapel for the Brethren. Headley Park, on the border of Woolmer Forest, is the seat of Sir Robert Samuel Wright B.C.L. Justice of the High Court of Justice (Queen’s Bench Division), who erected the handsome mansion in 1884. Eveley, the residence of John Tatham Smithes esq, in the village of Standford, is a mansion of stone in the Gothic style. The Bishop of Winchester is lord of the manor. The principal landowners are Mr. Justice Robert S. Wright, Mrs. Kingdon, Sir Archibald Keppel Macdonald bart. of Woolmer, Mrs. Petar, A. Ingham Whitaker esq. of Grayshott Hall, Liphook, John Tatham Smithes esq. Ulick John Burke esq. Charles Erskine Vertue esq. and J. A. Chalcraft esq. The soil and subsoil are sandy The chief crops are barley and wheat. The area is 6,881 acres of land, 3,343 of which were waste, but about 1,600 or 1,700 acres of the latter have been inclosed and plantations laid out, greatly altering the appearance of this parish, which contains a portion of Woolmer forest; there are 42 acres of water in the parish; rateable value, £7,024; the population in 1891 was 1,783.

Schools

A school-room was built in 1755, by the Rev. G. Holmes D.D. for 12 poor children, who were taught free, & was endowed by him with a rent-charge of £6 on certain land, & with the rent of three acres of land; the whole yields about £13 yearly.
