Historical Description

MINSTEAD (or Minesteed) is a parish and village, in the New Forest, 5 miles west from Totton station, on the Southampton and Bournemouth section of the London and South Western railway, 2 north from Lyndhurst, 10 ½ north from Lymington and 10 ½ west from Southampton, in the New Forest division of the county, union and hundred of the New Forest, Southampton county court district, Lymington petty sessional division, rural deanery of Lyndhurst and archdeaconry and diocese of Winchester: it was at a place near Stony Cross, 2 miles north-west, in this parish, that William Rufus was killed; the spot where stood the oak tree against which the fatal arrow glanced is marked by a stone, raised by Earl De La Warr. The church of All Saints is in part of the 13th century, but the rest of the structure has been much altered; it now consists of chancel and nave and an embattled western tower of brick, with pinnacles, rebuilt in 1774, and containing 3 bells: the north doorway belongs to the original church. There are 300 sittings. The register dates from the year 1682. The living is a rectory, with the chapelry of Lyndhurst annexed, joint net yearly value £274, with 21 acres of glebe, and residence, in the gift of Henry Francis Compton esq. and held since 1842 by the Rev. John Compton M.A. of Merton College, Oxford, hon. canon of Winchester, and surrogate. There are charities of about £18 yearly for bread and clothing, arising from Dr. Berdmore's gift, and invested in Consols, and Brown's charity derived from lands at Christchurch, but varying in amount. Minstead Manor House, the seat of Henry Francis Compton esq. J.P. is a fine brick mansion standing on an eminence, with a southern aspect, situated in a park of 400 acres, 200 of which are planted with rhododendrons. Castle Malwood, is the seat of William Alexander Grant esq. and stands in grounds of 63 acres. Blaekwater House, is the seat of Francis Compton esq. M.A., D.C.L., D.L., J.P.; Minstead Lodge of Mrs. Matthews Duncan, and Malwood, of the Right Hon. Sir William George Granville Vernon-Harcourt M.P., P.C., Q.C.; the grounds comprise about 22 acres. The principal landowners are H. F. Compton esq. who is lord of the manor, John Jeffreys esq. of Canterton, W. D. Preston esq. and the trustees of the late Charles Hill esq. The soil is loam; subsoil, on the south of Stony Cross consists of Barton clay, and to the north of the Bracklesham beds; the top of the hills are of gravel and are from secondary deposits. The chief crops are wheat, oats and barley. The area is 10,236 acres, far the greater portion of which are forest, and 10 of water; rateable value, £5,592; the population in 1891 was 868. Minstead includes Canterton, London Minstead and Emery Down; Alum Green, formerly extra-parochial, has been annexed to Minstead parish.
