Historical Description

PRIVETT is a parish and village, 6 miles north-west from Petersfield station on the direct Portsmouth line of the London and South Western railway, and 13 east from Winchester, in the Eastern division of the county, hundred of East Meon, and union, petty sessional division and county court district of Petersfield, and in the rural deanery of Petersfield and archdeaconry and diocese of Winchester. The church of The Holy Trinity was built in 1876—8, at a cost of £22,000 by William Nicholson esq. J.P. of Basing Park, from the designs of Sir A. W. Blomfield A.R.A., F.S.A, and consecrated April, 1878, and is an exceedingly beautiful structure of flint, with Doulton stone dressings, in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, clerestoried nave of four bays, aisles, transepts, north porch, and a western tower with spire rising to the height of 160 feet and containing 8 bells: the exterior is enriched with carving, including a statue of the Rt. Rev. Edward Harold Browne D.D. Bishop of Winchester, 1873—91, placed in a richly-carved niche upon the north side of the tower: the pavements throughout are of Italian mosaic marble: the seats and fittings are of oak: all the chancel windows are stained and illustrate passages in the life of Our Lord: the altar cloth is a fine specimen of Belgian needlework: there are 240 sittings. The register dates from the year 1539. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value, £300, with residence, in the gift of William Nicholson esq. D.L. who has raised it to its present value, and held since 1898 by the Rev. William Henry Thomas. William Nicholson esq. of Basing Park, is the chief landowner. The soil is varied; on the chalk hills it is a loam and stiff clay, in the valleys it is a stiff clay; subsoil, chalk. The chief crops are oats, wheat, barley and beans. The area is 1,279 acres; rateable value, £995; the population in 1891 was 227.
