Historical Description

THORLEY is a parish, about 1 mile east-by-south from Yarmouth and 9 west from Newport, in the liberty of West Medina, rural deanery of West Wight, archdeaconry of the Isle of Wight and diocese of Winchester. The Thorley brook, a feeder of the Yar, flows through the parish. The church of St. Swithin, erected on a site given by Lord Heytesbury, and consecrated December 9th, 1871, by the late Dr. Wilberforce, Bishop of Winchester, is a building of stone in the Early Decorated style, and consists of chancel, nave, small transept, south porch, and a tower containing 2 bells, transferred from the old church: in 1898 a stained east window was presented by the late Miss Leigh, of Yarmouth, and other members of the Leigh family. The font, an octagonal work, is assumed to date from 1614. A portion of the old church is still standing. The graveyard is closed, but there is a sum of £200, left by the late Miss Leigh, of Yarmouth, and invested in Consols, for the repair of the existing remains of the old church and the tombs. The register dates from the year 1614. The living is a vicarage, net income £95, with residence and 15 acres of glebe, in the gift of the Rev. Samuel Jenkins Johnson M.A. vicar of Malplash, and held since 1896 by the Rev. Vincent William Saulez M.A. of St. Mary Hall, Oxford. Lord Heytesbury is lord of the manor and sole landowner. The soil is clay; subsoil, clay. The chief crops are wheat, oats and barley. The area is 1,580 acres and 3 of tidal water and 27 of foreshore; rateable value, £1,624; and the population in 1891 was 177.

National School (mixed), with residence for mistress; built in 1866, enlarged 1894, for 90 children; average attendance, 54.
