Historical Description

UPTON GREY is a parish and large village, 4 ½ miles south-west from Hook station on the main line of the London and South Western railway, 3 ½ south-west from Odiham, 5 south-east from Basingstoke and 6 north from Alton, in the Northern division of the county, Bermondspit hundred, Basingstoke union, petty sessional division and county court district, rural deanery of Basingstoke and archdeaconry and diocese of Winchester.

The church of St. Mary is an ancient structure of brick and stone, in the Norman and Early English styles, standing on an eminence, and consisting of nave of four bays, north aisle, south porch, and a tower containing 4 bells: there are 200 sittings. The register dates from the year 1558. The living is a vicarage, gross yearly value £2, but augmented from appropriate tithes; net income £284, with residence, in the gift of Queen’s College, Oxford, and held since 1898 by the Rev. Herbert James Bodington M.A. of that college. The Llmbrey charity, invested in Consols, and producing £23 10s. annually, is distributed each Shrove Tuesday in money to the poor. Hoddington House, the seat of Lord Basing, erected in the last century by John Limbrey esq. and enlarged in 1886, is a substantial brick mansion standing in grounds of 100 acres, which, from their elevated situation, command picturesque views. The parish chiefly belongs to Sir Richard Byam Martin bart. of Upton Grey House, who is lord of the manor of Upton Grey, and to Lord Basing, who is lord of the manor of Hoddington. The soil is chiefly chalk; subsoil, chalk. The chief crops are wheat, barley, oats and roots. The area is 2,553 acres; rateable value, £2,039; the population in 1891 was 378 in the civil and 356 ill the ecclesiastical parish.

By Local Government Board Order Tyle Barn, with a population of 23, was, in 1879, transferred from Weston Patrick to Upton Grey.

Dean is a mile east; Ford, 2 miles north-east.

School (mixed), built in 1856, for 82 children; average attendance, 47.
