Historical Description

WEEKE (or Wyke), formerly one civil parish, has been divided under the provisions of the “Local Government Act, 1894” (56 & 57 Vict. c. 73), into the civil parishes of Weeke Without and Weeke Within, the latter consisting of the portion within the boundaries of the city of Winchester, and containing the Winchester station of the London and South Western railway; the parish is in the Western division of the county, hundred of Buddlesgate, Winchester petty sessional division, union and county court district, and in the rural deanery, archdeaconry and diocese of Winchester. The church of St. Matthew, commonly called St. Mary the Virgin, is a small and plain structure of rubble with stone dressings, in the Norman style, and consists of chancel, nave, south porch, vestry and a wooden turret containing 3 bells; it contains a very curious brass with a figure of St. Christopher carrying Our Saviour; underneath, a black-letter inscription to William Complyn and Annes, his wife, he died 21 May, 1498, and was a great benefactor to the church, having given 40s. at its dedication and £10 for new bells, besides other gifts. The register dates from the year 1580. The living is a rectory, net income £181, with 2 acres of glebe, in the gift of the Bishop of Winchester, and held since 1877 by the Rev. Edward Firmstone M.A. of Lincoln College, Oxford, who resides at Winchester. St. Paul’s chapel of ease is within the city of Winchester. The Union House for Winchester stands within this parish. Weeke Manor House, a mansion of brick, pleasantly seated on the road leading from Winchester to Stockbridge, is the residence of Col. Thomas Burnett Hitchcock J.P. The Dean and Chapter of Winchester, who are lords of the manor, Col. T. B. Hitchcock J.P. and Frederic Hitchcock esq. are the principal landowners. Teg Down is the property of the Dean and Chapter of Winchester. The soil is chalk and loam; subsoil, chalk. The chief crops are wheat, barley and oats. The area of Weeke Without is 913 acres; rateable value, £2,984; the population in 1891 was 278.
