The pleasant village of Wickham was anciently the manor and seat of the family of Uvedale, one of whom, when constable of Winchester Castle, became the patron of William of Wickham, before-mentioned.

Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

WICKHAM (or Wykeham) is a parish and pleasant village, 4 miles north from Fareham station, on the Havant and Southampton section of the London and South Western railway, 12 north-west from Portsmouth, and 69 ½ from London, in the Southern division of the county, hundred of Titchfieid, union and petty sessional division of Fareham, Portsmouth county court district, rural deanery of Bishop’s Waltham and archdeaconry and diocese of Winchester. The river Meon passes through the village. The church of St. Nicholas is a cruciform building of flint and brick, in the Gothic style, consisting of chancel, nave, 2 transepts, and a small western tower, and a wooden belfry stage and broach spire, covered with shingles, and containing a clock and 6 bells: the pulpit is of bath stone, with serpentine marble shafts: there are several stained windows to the Garnier family, including one to the Misses Garnier, sisters of the late Very Rev. Thos. Garnier D.C.L. Dean of Winchester, 1840: in the church is a handsome monument to Sir William Uvedale kt. c. 1600, with recumbent effigies of himself and his wife, and kneeling figures of four sons and five daughters, with shields of arms: the church was restored and enlarged in 1862, at a cost of nearly £1,600, and in 1874 the Uvedale-Garnier chapel was rebuilt and adapted as a vestry and organ chamber. The register dates from the year 1556. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £375, with 51 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of Jonathan Rashleigh esq. and held since 1893 by the Rev. Edward Hungerford Duke B.A. of Pembroke College, Cambridge. Here is a Wesleyan chapel. The charities amount to £24 yearly, arising from various bequests. William Long, afterwards known as William of Wykeham, Bishop of Winchester 1366—1404, Chancellor of England 1367—71, and the munificent founder, in 1373, of St. Mary’s College, Winchester, and in 1379 of New College, Oxford, was born in this parish in 1324; he died 27 September, 1404. Here is a large flour mill, a brewery, and several good shops: the flour mill contains beams made out of the timber of the American ship “Chesapeake,” captured by H.M.S. Shannon, commanded by Captain Sir P. B. Vere Broke K.C.B. June 1, 1813: the beams are marked with shot, and the mill, now known as the Chesapeake mill, is occupied by Mr. Francis Godrich. A fair is held annually on the 20th of May for the sale of farming stock. The principal seats are Rookesbury Park, occupied by John Carpenter-Garnier esq. M.A., D.L., J.P.; Little Park, by Charles Edward Radclyffe esq. J.P.; Park Place, by Lt.-Col. Harry Rich Farquhar J.P. and Wickham Lodge, by Miss Harvey. John Carpenter-Gamier esq. J.P. is lord of the manor and the principal landowner. The soil is loam; subsoil, chalk. The chief crops are wheat and other cereals, and there is some meadow land. The area is 2,427 acres of land and 22 of water; rateable value, £4,927; the population in 1891 was 1,161 in the civil and 1,173 in the ecclesiastical parish.

National School (mixed), built in 1869, for upwards of 200 children; average attendance, 159.
