Historical Description

WONSTON (or Wonsingbon) is a parish, 4 miles south-west from Micheldever station on the Basingstoke and Southampton section of the London and South Western railway and 7 north from Winchester, in the Western division of the county, Winchester union and petty sessional division, county court district, hundred of Buddlesgate, and rural deanery, archdeaconry and diocese of Winchester. A tributary of the Test flows through the parish. The church of the Holy Trinity is an ancient edifice, consisting of chancel, nave, north aisle, south porch, and an embattled western tower, containing 5 bells: it was repaired in 1829, at the expense of the Rev. Alexander Robert Charles Dallas M.A. the late rector, who died 13 Dec. 1869; and to whose memory the stained east window was erected: the galleries were removed, new font, pulpit and communion rails introduced in 1872: in 1884 the four chancel windows were filled with stained glass in memory of the Rev. Lewis Walsh Owen M.A. rector 1870, until his death, 4 Jan. 1884: the church was restored in 1871—2, at a cost of about £1,200, and reopened March 25th, 1872, by the late Bishop Wilberforce: it was also then reseated, and now affords 300 sittings. The register dates from the year 1570. The living is a rectory, net income £606, with 11 acres of glebe, and residence, in the gift of the Bishop of Winchester, and held since 1887 by the Rev. Charles Pierrepont Hutchinson M.A. of Trinity College, Cambridge. Lady McCreagh and the Dean and Chapter of Winchester are owners of the manors; the principal landowners are the Dean and Chapter of Winchester, Lady McCreagh, the trustees of the late George Bailey, and Mrs. Smallpiece. The soil is loam; subsoil, chalk. The chief crops are wheat, barley, oats and turnips. The area is 5,488 acres; rateable value, £3,600; the population in 1891 (including the hamlet of Sutton Scotney) was 730.
