Historical Description

COLWALL is a village and extensive parish, on the Worcestershire border, with a station on the Hereford and Worcester section of the Great Western railway, 4 miles north-east from Ledbury, 20 east from Hereford and 124 from London, in the Southern division of the county, Radlow hundred, Ledbury union, county court district and petty sessional division, rural deanery of South Frome, and archdeaconry and diocese of Hereford. The church of St. James the Great is an ancient building of stone in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, nave of five bays, aisles, south porch, and an embattled tower at the south-west angle of the church containing 6 bells: in the church are brasses with effigies to Anthony Hanford esq. ob. c. 1590, and Elizabeth his wife, with children: the east window is a memorial to Mrs. Penelope Custanee, wife of the late rector, and there are several memorial windows in the north and south aisles to members of the Bright family; the chancel was restored in 1866 at the cost of the Rev. Frederick Custance, late rector, who died in 1867; the nave was restored in 1881 and a new window in the south aisle given by the late Mrs. Bright, of Barton Court, to the memory of Miss Bright, of Brand lodge. There are sittings for 300 persons. The register dates from the year 1651. The living is a rectory, average tithe-rent charge £330, gross yearly value £438, including 54 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Bishop of Hereford, and held since 1867 by the Rev. George Musgrave Custanee M.A. of St. John’s College, Cambridge. There are Wesleyan chapels at Colwall Green and the Wyche, also a mission room called the Church of the “Good Shepherd” at the Wyche. The charities are about £25 yearly value. Soda and seltzer waters are manufactured here. Kilbury Camp, the Herefordshire Beacon and the Malvern Hills are objects of local interest. The Colwall Stone is evidently the remains of an ancient cross, a similar stone can also be seen in the churchyard, but is in a better state of preservation. Hope End is a noble modern mansion, occupying a commanding position between Malvern and Ledbury, and was erected by James Charles Archibald Hewitt esq. J.P. the present owner, in place of the old house; it is built of local red sandstone, with dressings of Bath stone, in the Jacobean style: the former house was the early residence of Mrs. Barrett Browning, and subsequently the scene of many of her writings; it was of this place she wrote— “Green the land is where my daily Steps in jocund childhood played; Dimpled close with hill and valley, Dappled very close with shade; Summer snow of apple blossom Running up from glade to glade.” Barton Court is the residence of Benjamin Bright esq . The Ecclesiastical Commissioners and Benjamin Bright esq. are lords of the manor; and Benjamin Bright esq. Mrs. Holland, Lady Henry Somerset, J. C. A. Hewitt esq. Mrs. Ballard, Rev. James Franck Bright D.D. master of University College, Oxford, Robert William Raper esq. of Hoe Court, and Nicholson Peyton esq. are chief landowners. The soil is mixed, mostly heavy; subsoil, clay. The chief crops are wheat, beans and hops. The area is 3,580 acres; rateable value, £11,387; the population in 1891 was 1,506 in the civil and 1,355 in the ecclesiastical parish.
