Historical Description
CUSOP, anciently “Cheweshope,” is a parish and village on the Hereford and Hay road, on the borders of Brecknockshire, 20 miles west from Hereford and 1 south-east from Hay, in the Northern division of the county, in Ewyas Lacy hundred, Hay union and county court district, Bredwardine petty sessional division, rural deanery of Weobley (first division) and archdeaconry and diocese of Hereford. The Hay station, on the Hereford, Hay and Brecon line, is in this parish, 164 miles from London. The church of St. Mary, built by the monks of Llanthony, is an ancient building of stone in the Norman style, consisting of chancel, nave, south porch, and a western turret containing two bells: the church was restored in 1857, at a cost of £700, under the direction of Mr. J. P. St. Aubyn, architect, of London. In the churchyard are four very fine yew trees, supposed to be over 800 years old. The register of marriages dates from the year 1754; baptisms and burials, 1709. The living is a rectory, average tithe rent-charge £170, net yearly value £184, including 40 acres of glebe, in the gift of Miss I. B. Thomas, of Rochester, Kent, and held since 1894 by the Rev. George Dermer Pagden M.A. Christ College, Cambridge. The foundations of Cusop Castle, one of a chain of fortresses anciently defending the Welsh borders, still remain. There are some barrows in the township. Dr. Francis Trumper, of Hay, who is lord of the manor, and Rev.S. Baker Penoyre, C. J. Lilwall esq. and Mrs. Watkins of Glassbury Hay, are the chief landowners. The soil is sandy; subsoil, chiefly sandstone. The chief crops are wheat, barley, oats and swedes. The area is 2,294 acres; rateable value, £3,016; the population in 1891 was 294 A School Board of 5 members was formed here 2 October, 1874; H. C. Lloyd, hon. clerk to the board.
