The Hay station, on the Hereford, Hay and Brecon line, is in this parish, 164 miles from London. The church of St. Mary, built by the monks of Llanthony, is an ancient building of stone in the Norman style, consisting of chancel, nave, south porch, and a western turret containing two bells: the church was restored in 1857, at a cost of £700, under the direction of Mr. J. P. St. Aubyn, architect, of London. In the churchyard are four very fine yew trees, supposed to be over 800 years old. The register of marriages dates from the year 1754; baptisms and burials, 1709. There are some barrows in the township. Dr. Francis Trumper, of Hay, who is lord of the manor, and Rev.S. Baker Penoyre, C. J. Lilwall esq. and Mrs. Watkins of Glassbury Hay, are the chief landowners. The soil is sandy; subsoil, chiefly sandstone. The chief crops are wheat, barley, oats and swedes.
