Historical Description

EYE is a village, township and parish, between the two roads leading from Leominster to Ludlow, with a station (called Berrington and Eye station) on the London and North Western and Great Western joint railway from Shrewsbury to Hereford, 4 miles north from Leominster, 17 from Hereford and 158 from London, in the Northern division of the county, Wolphy hundred, Leominster petty sessional division, union and county court district, rural deanery of Leominster (second division), and archdeaconry and diocese of Hereford. The parish is divided into two townships, viz. Eye, Ashton and Moreton (which together form one township) and Luston, and each township collects its own rates for poor and roads. The church of SS. Peter and Paul is a plain building of stone in the Gothic style, consisting of chancel with north chapel, clerestories nave, aisles, vestry, north porch and an embattled western tower, with turrets, and containing 6 bells and a clock: the north or Rodney chapel is divided from the chancel by carved oak screens and contains two altar tombs believed to belong to the Cornwall family; that at the west end is of stone and coloured marble and bears a recumbent stone effigy of a knight in chain armour; on the eastern tomb are the stone effigies of a knight, also in chain armour, and his lady; the sides of this tomb are panelled and enriched with various figures: the stained east window is a memorial to Sarah (Singleton), wife of Robert, sixth Baron Rodney, who died 1st Oct. 1882, erected in 1884 by her children: against the north wall is a memorial to the Right Hon. Thomas Harley P.C. Lord Mayor of London, 1768 and M.P. for London, 1761 to 1774 and for Herefordshire from 1775 to 1802 (ob. 1804): the chapel retains a piscina in the east wall: the stained east window of the chancel was given by the Hon. Anne Pipon, of Berrington Hall, widow of Major Manaton Pipon: against the north wall is a medallion in bas-relief representing the patron saints: on the south wall is a stone tablet bearing the figure of an ecclesiastic; these were dug up in the churchyard during the restoration: the south wall retains a piscina: the chancel is fitted with oak stalls and there is a carved oak pulpit of Jacobean date and a Norman font: the massive oak centre beam of the nave is richly carved to represent a vine: the church was thoroughly restored in 1874, under the direction of Mr. Chick, architect, of Hereford, at a cost of about £3,000: a new organ was erected in 1887 at a cost of £280, raised by subscription. The register dates from the year 1573, and contains many interesting records of the Berrington, Blount, Cornewall and Gorges families. The living is a vicarage, average tithe rent-charge £259, net yearly value £200, with residence and a small quantity of glebe, in the gift of the Lord Chancellor, and held since 1890 by the Rev. Wilfrid George Buckle M.A. of St. Mary Hall, Oxford. The Vicarage house, near the church, and formerly the manor house, was erected by Ferdinando Gorges in 1680, and is a good specimen of the architecture of that period; the ceilings in particular are real works of art, exhibiting wreaths of flowers and foliage carved in the most delicate manner. Charities :—Miss Meliora Gorge left £50, subsequently invested in land, which when sold realized £440; the capital is now invested in the 2 ¾ per Cent. Consols; and is given to poor widows of the parish, who receive £1 each on Easter day, arising from the interest of the same. There is also a close at Moreton, consisting of one acre of arable land in the Park field and also one acre in the Grove field, for which 5s. per year only is paid; this is likewise given to the poor. A Social Club is held during the winter months, in connection with the Church Army. Berrington Hall, the seat of Lord Rodney D.L., J.P. is a mansion of stone beautifully situated in a well-wooded park of 400 acres, and containing a sheet of water 20 acres in extent. The house and property formerly belonged to the Cornewall family, and were purchased by the Right Hon. Thomas Harley, alderman of the city of London and afterwards Lord Mayor, whose eldest daughter married George, second Baron Rodney and eldest son of the famous admiral, Lord Rodney, 1st baron, d. 21 May, 1792; placed on the terrace in front of the mansion are four cannon, taken from the Spaniards by Admiral Rodney, who, in 1780, destroyed the Spanish fleet, under Langara, off Cape St. Vincent: the four cannon are dated respectively 1754, 1756, 1756 and 1755, and each has the inscription :—“Solano fecit. Ferdinand VI. D.G. Hispaniae rex.” Nordan Hall, at present unoccupied, is a mansion of brick, pleasantly situated on the summit of the hill, on the road from Leominster to Ludlow; it commands open views of the adjoining scenery, with a fine prospect over the vale of Leominster. The principal landowners are Lord Rodney and the Rev. W. T. Kevill-Davies, of Croft Castle, who is lord of the manor of Luston, and Lord Rodney of that of Ashton. The soil is clayey; subsoil, gravel, and in some parts peat. The chief crops are wheat, beans, hops and apples. The area of the entire parish is 4,307 acres; the population of Eye, Moreton and Ashton township in 1891 was 315; rateable value, £4,830. Ashton is about 1 mile east; Moreton, half a mile east.

Church of England School, built in 1855, in the township of Moreton, by Sarah, Lady Rodney; it was enlarged in 1872, and again in 1894 at a cost of £115, & a porch erected (1858) at the expense of Lord Rodney, who is also the chief supporter of the school, which will hold 120 children; number on books, 112; average attendance, 81; there is a master’s residence.
