Historical Description

ORLETON is a village and parish, on a loop of the Upper Leominster and Ludlow road, which is also the direct road from Ludlow to Presteign, 1 ½ miles south-west from Wooferton station on the Shrewsbury and Hereford (Great Western and London and North Western joint) railway, 5 south from Ludlow and 6 north from Leominster, in the Northern division of the county, Leominster division of Wolphy hundred, Leominster union, petty sessional division and county court district, rural deanery of Leominster (2nd division) and archdeaconry and diocese of Hereford. The parish is 3 miles long and 2 ¾ wide. The church, supposed to have been dedicated to St. George, is an ancient building of stone in the Transition style, consisting of chancel, nave, north porch and a western tower with shingled spire containing a clock (erected in 1887) and 3 bells; the chancel retains a piscina, and there is a very remarkable chest hewn out of solid timber, and remains of good stained glass: the font is of Early Norman date, having 9 figures representing the Apostles carved around it; there is a fine Jacobean carved pulpit and on the chancel wall is a brass with armorials and surrounded by a laurel wreath to Thomas Blount, obit Dec. 26, 1679: the two east windows were filled with stained glass to the memory of Letitia Anne Edwards, wife of the vicar, Oct. 23rd, 1892; the church was thoroughly restored and the chancel rebuilt in 1863-4, at a cost of about £1,200, under the direction of Mr. Drew, architect, of Storey’s gate, Westminster, London: skeletons of large size were found under the floor, and on the west wall some rude frescoes of Scripture scenes, with decorative work, were met with, which could not, however, be preserved; the church affords 210 sittings; in the churchyard is a very ancient cross. The register dates from the year 1565. The living is a vicarage, average tithe rent-charge £95, net yearly value £159, including 84 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the governors of Lucton school, and held since 1853 by the Rev. William Edward Edwards M.A. of Brasenose College, Oxford, rural dean of Leominster (2nd division). There are Wesleyan and Primitive Methodist chapels and a meeting place for Christian Brethren, the former a neat brick building erected in 1890. There is also a reading room open during the winter months. The ancient order of Foresters (Court Moor Park Lodge) meets at the Boot Inn, and Independent Order of Odd Fellows (M. U.) (Loyal St. George Lodge) meets at the Maidenhead Inn. A fair is held yearly on the 23rd April, for the far-famed Hereford cattle, but is sparsely attended now. The charities are of about £12 yearly value, derived from land and allotments, of which amount £5 4s. yearly is distributed in six four penny loaves every Sunday and the rest in coals. Orleton Court, now in the occupation of John Richard Hill esq. is an ancient timbered residence. In removing the oak panellings the following curious inscription was found on the wall, over the fireplace, in the state bedroom—so called from the tradition that Charles II. slept there after the battle of Worcester:—“Honner Him In Hart That suffered on the cross for Them as Worship Him;” and in removing the staircase a seven-pound cannon ball was found lodged in the wall. This place is also said to have been visited by Pope. In the village there are a great many ancient half-timbered houses. From the hill at the top of the common a most extensive and magnificent view is obtained. There is a remarkable landslip called “The Churn.” Archibald Blount esq. who is lord of the manor, O. E. Greenly esq. of Titley, Mr. William Bright of Comberton, Mrs. O’Connor, John Richard Hill, Joseph Rogers esq. of Eaton, Madeira road, Bournemouth, the Governors of Lucton School and Mrs. Yapp are the chief landowners. The soil is clay and sand; the subsoil is rock and a peculiar sand. The chief crops are wheat, barley, beans, apples and hops. The area is 2,606 acres; rateable value, £5,583 7s. 6d.; the population in 1891 was 513.

National School (mixed), built, with residence for the master & mistress, in 1855, at a cost of £1,009, for 120 children; average attendance, 58.
